Please call your U.S. Senators and ask them to vote NO on Joint Resolution 140. The BWCA is the most-visited wilderness area in the U.S. It has about 165,000 visitors annually. It also has 20% of all the fresh water in the entire national forest system. The prospect of copper-nickel mining close to the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness (or BWCA) has divided the state. Supporters include business and labor groups that want the high-paying jobs and economic impact of a nearly $2 billion project. Opponents include environmental groups that warn of possible catastrophic water pollution in the state’s most beloved wilderness. The plans to start mining having gone back and forth under recent presidential administrations. Most recently, President Joe Biden enacted a 20-year ban on mining on 225,000 acres of the Superior National Forest. However, President-elect Donald Trump has said that he would reverse the ban and “turn the Iron Range into a mineral powerhouse like never before.” Trump could undo the ban administratively or Congress could reverse it. Additionally, Republican U.S. Rep. Pete Stauber has a bill not only to revoke the ban, but also return the mineral leases to Twin Metals Minnesota, the company that has proposed a mining site near Ely, Minnesota. Even if the mining ban is lifted, the process of getting state approvals and environmental reviews would take years. My family goes to the Boundary Waters every single year for a canoe backpacking trip and it’s one of the most pristine, beautiful places to go with so much wildlife including loons, eagles, moose and more. It’s threatened by proposed copper mining along waterways that flow into BWCA and into Voyageurs National Park. In 2023, the Department of Interior signed a Public Land Order banning mining on 225,504 acres of public land around the Boundary Waters. Right now, there are efforts to overturn the federal mining ban. A vote can happen as early as this week. 👉 HOW TO SUPPORT Please take 5 minutes to call your reps to vote no on HJ RES 140 that would allow toxic copper mining to pollute and threaten the BWCA (Boundary Waters Canoe Area) in Minnesota. I just know the places that bring me peace and bring me so much joy to me are being threatened. As someone who isn’t from Minnesota originally but calls Minnesota home it’s been hard watching what’s happening. I know I’m only one person but it’s important to protect the places that bring the little spark we seem to gather these days. I love the Boundary Waters. They bring me so much adventure, calmness, joy, and peace. I can’t imagine places like this being taken away from wildlife that call the Boundary Waters home. So many look forward to visiting yearly. Protect the Boundary Waters! Contact your members of Congress and ask them to oppose legislation – including H.J. Res. 140 – that would eliminate BWCA-protections, effectively give away our public lands, and pave the way for dangerous copper sulfide mining.
