This is utterly heartbreaking, yet a sad reality of what marine life faces every single day. You can hear this unfortunate humpback struggling to breathe. She was one of the lucky ones—and was eventually cut loose. Entanglement specifically refers to the wrapping of lines, netting, or other materials of anthropogenic origin around the body of an animal. Bycatch refers to the unintentional capture of species such as small cetaceans in fishing nets. Worldwide, both entanglement and bycatch in fisheries operations pose a major risk for 86% of the world’s toothed whales, according to the Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals. Entanglement is a pressing and longstanding threat to the wellbeing of cetaceans globally. Entanglement doesn’t only cause injury and distress in whales, and restrict life-sustaining day-to-day activities; whales can also be anchored in place by fishing gear such as crab and prawn traps and aquaculture gear, causing them to drown. Various forms of fishing gear such as gillnets, driftnets, traps, weirs, purse-seine nets, long-lines, trawls and others were implicated with causing entanglement that may lead to suffocation and death of whales, dolphins and porpoises. Globally, over 300,000 small cetaceans die each year due to entanglement in fishing gear 2. Several species are at high risk of extinction due to bycatch, including the vaquita in the Gulf of Mexico and Maui’s dolphins in New Zealand. Humpback whales (Megaptera novaeangliae) are one of the most commonly entangled species of baleen whale and well known for entanglement in fishing gear around the world. For humpback whales, half of the individuals in some large whale populations are entangled at least once in their life, including 52-78% of humpbacks in southeast Alaska. #commercialfishing #bycatch 🎥 @captain.coleharrison

The shark is ensnared by fishing hooks on both sides of her jaw, rendering her unable to feed. According to Janelle, the shark “got caught multiple times and was very hungry.” Despite her attempts to provide sustenance, the food would simply slip out of the shark’s mouth. Whether it is sports fishing or regular fishing, the unintended capture of sharks, known as bycatch, leads to the death of thousands, if not millions, of these individuals every year. In this particular case, the shark was hooked by sports fishermen, possibly without intention, and released back into the wild, but the damage inflicted upon her jaw became a fatal sentence. Seeing videos like this on a daily basis breaks my heart. Bycatch is one of the most significant threats to maintaining healthy marine ecosystems across the globe. Approximately 20-40 percent of what fishermen catch every year is discarded at sea, likely already dead or dying. As seen in this video, these fisherman fail to have the proper equipment to even remotely move this shark in a proper manner. If there is any hope of keeping amazing creatures like the whale shark alive on our planet, restrictions on mass fishing must be enacted. Intelligent fishing methods that significantly reduce bycatch do exist! Nets with specialty openings or the use of odors to deter sharks from bait are just a couple of examples of selective fishing methods that significantly reduce bycatch. These types of injures are so hard to see, but are important to highlight to bring awareness to the public. Sadly this is the best outcome for these animals. Accidentally caught as bycatch, but still let go to try and live on their life. Unfortunately most times they get injured in the process and even when released have detriments they have to overcome to ensure they still survive. I have been seeing this shark for weeks now and he looks incredible skinny. I hope that somehow the fishing gear he has swallowed internally, breaks down so that he no longer has all of this tackle dangling from his jaw. His challenges hunting will never go away, but hopefully he can scavenge enough to survive and eventually thrive🦈🩶 . . . . . . .
