The cable Pullover offers up resistance all through the ROM and the lats have the best leverage through this joint angle ROM, this is how you train the lats (secondary triceps) with a pullover (same with the pullover machine set up). On Cross bench pullover, there is around 160-180° of flexion, this is where the pecs and triceps have the best leverage to do shoulder extension. On top of that, since it’s a dumbbell then the peak forces are also there at the top, so this is (mainly) a costal pec exercise. For the past few months I’ve been hitting the same pull day and this is what it looks like. I’ve been really focused lately on progressively overloading, I kind of lost focus on doing that for a while. I train nearly every set to failure and take around 2-4 minutes to rest between sets. This is what works for me and I’d definitely recommend giving it a try: Lat Pulldown - 2x6-10 Seated Row - 2x8-10 Cable Pullovers - 2x8-12 Rope Hammer Curls - 2x8-10 Dumbbell Curls - 2x6-10

The lat pullover is a misunderstood exercise. Synonymous with the cable pullover, there’s a couple pointers to keep in mind on this exercise: 1) thrusting on the movement doesn’t add anything and will likely result in you using momentum. This is why I sometimes even take a knee on this exercise 2) stop raising your arms once you reach around eye level — the lats lose leverage around 120 degrees of shoulder flexion. This means, continuing to raise your arms and ducking to “stretch” lats might not be worth it due to the leverage lost. This is the same reason why a dumbbell pullover is a chest exercise. But, I digress, keep putting in work! It’s worth it. #fitness #gym

Bias a bigger back 💪🏼 By slightly pushing toward the cable & driving the handle down toward your hips with the arms a bit straighter, you change the mechanics of the lift. The lats now have a longer lever to work against at the shoulder, and elbow flexion plays a smaller role. 🗣 Translation: more shoulder extension, more lat bias. 🗣 That’s why the weight has to come down on these Cable Pullovers. On this variation, the lats have to work against different leverage with no assistance from the muscles that bend the elbow — like your biceps and brachioradialis. This isn’t a correction to traditional pulldowns. This is just a variation — another tool to keep in your toolbox! Use it if it helps you feel & load your lats better. Skip it if it doesn’t. The basics still matter. Here’s one of our favorite ways to mix these in: • Start with this pullover-style path to pre-fatigue the lats • Then add weight and go right into regular cable pulldowns • Don’t be surprised if those suddenly hit harder after you’ve already smoked your lats from the cable pullovers!
