Did your baby have caput?! ✔️Caput succedaneum refers to common benign edema (swelling) that crosses cranial suture lines and midline that appears on an infant’s scalp shortly after birth. ➡️This swelling is associated with multiple etiologies related to birth, including strain to the newborn’s head during vertex (head down) and vacuum-assisted delivery. ✔️The etiology of caput succedaneum is more often associated with an extended labor course in vertex delivery. ➡️The fetal head is subjected to pressure by both the uterine and vaginal walls as it passes through the cervix. ➡️Additionally, the condition has been associated with both forceps and vacuum-assisted delivery when the vacuum cup contacts the head. ➡️Operative vaginal delivery represents roughly 5% of deliveries in the U.S. ✔️The fluid accumulation in caput succedaneum is more commonly serosanguinous, but can be hemorrhagis, and is superior to the cranial sutures leading to an edematous, fluctuant, pitting mass that crosses the cranial sutures lines on an exam. ➡️This is an important distinguishing feature from cephalohematoma (birth trauma resulting in edema that does not cross cranial suture lines) and other related injuries. ✔️Treatment and management of caput succedaneum are observational. ➡️A majority of cases will self-resolve within 48 hours, and management includes observation and reassurance only. ➡️Infants should continue to receive a standard of care monitoring for neonatal jaundice. ➡️Rarely, caput succedaneum can result in new or worsening hyperbilirubinemia as the bilirubin is resorbed back into the systemic circulation. ✔️Go to my “newborn” highlight for more info! ✔️Stitch with @thegodnasr! #conehead #caput #birth #childbirth #laboranddelivery

Caput succedaneum is swelling (edema) that affects a newborn’s scalp. ✔️ Cause : Occurs from pressure on the head as the baby moves through the birth canal during a prolonged or difficult vaginal delivery. ✔️Fluid builds underneath the scalp, causing swelling. The baby’s head may have a cone-shaped appearance or newborn conehead Treatment : Caput succedaneum is typically harmless. The swelling should go away without treatment in a few hours or days. 💥Note : It is different from Cephalohematoma ✔️Cephalohematoma is a buildup of blood (hemorrhage) underneath a newborn’s scalp. It appears soon after birth. The bulge is discrete, does not cross the suture lines of the bones on their head, and located at the back of the head ( Usually on one side). It may take months to go away.
