DRI will sleep with one I open! Here’s Leo—freshly washed, and deeply offended but when a long-haired cat experiences a Code Brown emergency (yes, explosive diarrhea, and yes, it’s as bad as it sounds 🤢), sometimes you have no choice.
Do cats need baths?
Most cats are fastidiously clean and spend a good chunk of their day grooming themselves. Their rough tongues do an excellent job of keeping their coats in top condition. Bathing them unnecessarily can actually strip their natural oils.
When should you bathe a cat?
Here are some scenarios where a bath might be unavoidable:
✔️ A Code Brown situation (Long-haired cat owners, you know the horror and that’s what happened today.)
✔️ Fleas or skin conditions (Medicated shampoos may be necessary.)
✔️ Greasy or matted fur. Older or overweight cats may struggle to groom properly and need to be washed
✔️ If they get into something smelly.
✔️Sphinx cats need regular bathing as part of their skin care.
Most cats don’t need routine baths, but sometimes life has other plans. If you have a long-haired cat, especially one prone to “accidents,” be prepared for the occasional bath—and the grudge that follows. 🤣

ELIn addition to washing Elsie, we also washed the bedding from last night, and everything cloth that she hangs out on. If I thought about it last night I could have wiped her down probably.
But by this morning it had worked its way deeper into her fur and I was reacting when I picked her up or petted her. I do have a good allergist and usual routine for dealing with this, so I do not need any advice in the comments, please. Suffice to say that Colorado is the wrong state for me to live in.
I really believe that because we were able to explain to her what we were doing and how long it would last, that it was a lot easier. She did yell twice right at the end but overall she was so good.
Right now she's snuggling under the covers with me. So I think I'm forgiven.
