Something I’ve always questioned during concealed carry-focused classes is how heavy instructors implement reloads. ***Learning proper reloads and practicing them is still EXTREMELY IMPORTANT, don’t get me wrong! But what I’ve seen time and time again is men and women will run an entire class with 1-2 spare mags because the instructor requires it but that’s not how they actually carry... OR... they only have a 6-10 round firearm with 1-2 spare magazines (like Cali people), they run out of ammo before everyone else during the firing sequence, and the instructor lectures him/her on why they need a larger capacity gun... So my question is... How many rounds is acceptable and reasonable? And then why don’t we train that way in classes than expecting everyone to have 75 rounds on them at 1 time? In 2017 I was carrying a Glock 43 with 6+1 rounds. I carried an extra mag w/ 8 rounds most of the time because, at the time, the choices were to carry a tiny gun or a large one. I was praised for this decision. (7+8=15 rounds) Fast forward, there are guns like the Reflex XL by @Fn_america that come with 15 and 18 round magazines. I carry 15+1 in the chamber with no spare mag. People lose their minds and now I’m a dumb dumb. (16 rounds total) How I teach (you can agree or disagree): 1. We discuss carrying with a comfortable amount of rounds and brainstorm pros and cons that fit their lifestyle. 2. Explain what I PERSONALLY AND HONESTLY DO and why: Don’t carry a spare mag now because my gun carries 16. Yes I understand the malfunction part 3. Further educate on pros and cons: Magazine failure, malfunction, added weight, ability to conceal, daily lifestyle, gun size, comfortability 4. My students makes their OWN decision knowing all of the information and I don’t belittle or talk down. Thank you for coming to my TED Talk
