It’s always chapter one… impossible to begin, impossible to end, impossible to make juuuust right. It’s a looming element of doom. But it must be conquered, mastered even, if your manuscript is ever to make it to the shelves. Some quick tips for writing that tricky first chapter: 1) Don’t overstress. You will have to edit or rewrite it anyway. So just get something, anything, on the page. 2) Find the right approach for YOUR STORY. Sometimes we forget that there are a million ways to begin. So find one that you like. 3) There’s always time to go back. So if you have to, just get it out of the way and when your story is forming up, return to the beginning with new eyes. I hope this helps! Keep writing and honing your craft. The three essential elements of a first chapter ⬇️ Look, you’ll never get ANY part of a draft right on the first try, and that’s ok! But you really got to nail that first chapter. It’s what hooks in readers, agents, yourself on the seventeenth round of edits…yeah, it’s pretty important. 🥲 Think yours is falling flat? Check for these key elements: ✅ Characters Not just names and faces but something to make the reader CARE about them and their story. ✅ Conflict I’m here for the DRAMA. Drop the conflict early on to hook me in. ✅ Next Steps WHERE is the story going from here? How does your character react to the conflict? Give the reader an indication of what’s coming next. One important note: I’d recommend using this checklist AFTER you’ve written the full draft and are circling back to edits. No double-dipping during the writing process here. If you’re reading because you’re starting a first draft, great! You’re ahead of the game…but don’t let the first chapter become a hurdle. Write it and move on.
