The main lesson I (re)learned from today’s workout (which I only had a 45 minute window for) was simple: use the exercise, or lose it. Of course, this is a pretty extreme and broad statement, but it does ring true to an extent. I haven’t done the pin press with appreciable weight in a very long time. For that reason, 275 pounds felt like twice that. In the past, I distinctly remember being up over 300 for that exercise with what felt like less relative difficult difficulty than this. contrastingly, the press variation I’ve been using of choice for the last number of months consistently has been the incline dumbbell. After the pedestrian showing on the pin press, I moved to this pattern, expecting an equally poor result. My confidence levels in the workout had me thinking it was just “one of those days”, and aimed to hit the 80s for sets of 8 to 10. Suffice to say, I surprised myself, which instantly reminded me that the poor showing by my standards on the pin press was a direct product of a lack of exposure to it (thus a lack of practice with it). At the end of the day, don’t panic. If you’re spending time doing certain lifts, they’ll get stronger. If you’re not spending time doing them, expect a little reduction. What matters most is you stay consistent with working out in general. If you don’t compete, the rest is unimportant. Have a hard time feeling the counter-push on a bench press that helps to drive the dumbbells or barbell back up? Try this. You may have seen people do this before. Take a peek by letting your head lift up as you lower the weight down. It accomplishes two things. 1) This visually makes you feel as if the dumbbells or barbell have to travel a shorter distance (though they don’t) since your eyes are approaching them and closing the gap visually on the descent. 2) Once the head is lifted it has only one place to go as you push the dumbbells back up…down and into the bench! This will help to give you that equal and opposite force to drive the weight up more easily. Give it a try and see if a quick peek helps you to create a new peak bench press PR in 2025! #benchpress #dumbbells #dumbbellexercises #bench #pecs #chestexercise #weights #strength #athleanx #jeffcavaliere
