STIf you’ve been warned “don’t ever let them taste egg” this will mess with your head 👀👇
Egg eating usually starts because a hen discovers a broken egg in the nest (thin shell, soft egg, accidentally cracked, stepped on).
Once they learn what’s inside, some hens will repeat it and it can spread flock-wide as a learned behaviour.
What actually drives egg eating in most backyard flocks is...
Broken eggs left in the nest.
Weak shells from nutrition issues, especially not enough calcium in a proper layer diet.
Stress and overcrowding, which increases pecking and problem behaviours.
Boredom and lack of enrichment (they start pecking at anything interesting)
Feeding eggs back is not some automatic “creates an egg eater” switch.
The real risk is teaching the nest = snack bar by leaving broken eggs, letting them practice pecking eggs in the box, or giving raw egg in a way that looks like “their normal eggs.”
Tip: if you feed eggs back, many keepers do it cooked or mixed up so they get the nutrition without reinforcing the “whole egg in the nest” pattern.

Are you Henopausal? Please follow along! I love my chicken loving fam.
After losing my dog, Scout, I was heartbroken. I wasn’t ready for another dog and have always loved the idea of having a small flock of chickens. I wish I could say my husband was as excited. Poor guy.
I bought a chicken coop on FBMP and we scrapped together this run with a runway connecting the two structures. I painted the hardwire cloth black to make the screen disappear and see them better. Yes, I did the inside too.
I hand selected my timbits at a local store. I wanted 6 different breeds so I could easily tell them apart. Chickens are silly. They are smart. They are dramatic and can be mean (Stella). I actually bought 7 after another customer was raving about her favorite breed. It was Pearl, a Pearl Star leghorn. She was my first to lay an egg in the yard while I was watching. She laid an egg while I was holding her once, which is crazy if you know chickens. She is the sibling that has eaten her 2nd or 3rd helping when you’re still making your 1st plate. This is why Stella hates her. Pearl was my 1st and hopefully only chicken to have surgery. A long story short, my husband fed them grass while I was away on a trip thinking he was being nice and her crop became impacted. The vet said, you either need to put her down or she needs surgery. That was an easy decision for me. She had surgery when she was 5 mos old. Side note: chickens can eat grass but you shouldn’t pull grass and feed it to them. They don’t chew their food. The food is broken down in their crop and the long blades of grass were indigestible.
The chicky babes will be 3 in April. I highly recommend getting chickens, but not because eggs are expensive. Caring for them way surpasses that.

Mabel - Buff Orpington (highly recommend)
Greta - Americauna (recommend) My only complaint about Greta is she is supposed to lay blue eggs. She doesn’t! She has blue ear lobes too!!

Stella - Golden Wyandotte (do not recommend- a pretty breed, but..)
