IACome with us to The Snow Centre in Hemel Hempstead.
🎿 You can book group lessons, a private instructor or do your own thing with a lift pass for the main slope. We booked two lift passes for one hour
🎿 If you want lessons at the weekend then book well in advance. There was plenty of availability for lift pass only with a choice of times
🎿 A lift pass costs from £39 per hour for an adult and £30 for a junior (up to 16). Cost varies and is more expensive at the weekend. Look out for discount codes - I found one for 20% off
🎿 The temp in the ski area is -6 so make sure you wear proper ski wear to keep warm including gloves which are compulsory. They have clothing to hire if you don’t own anything appropriate
🎿 Skis/snowboards, boots and helmets are included in the price. No need for goggles (although we took some just in case)
🎿 Allow 30/40 mins to get changed and collect equipment as the queue can be long and the changing area busy
🎿 There is a cafe upstairs serving decent food and drinks with a great view of the slope
🎿 Snow & Rock have a shop by the main entrance to pick up any ski gear

THLEARNING TO SKI AS AN ADULT 😅
Picking up a new hobby or skill as a grown-up is no mean feat, especially when that skill involves strapping planks to your feet and throwing yourself down a hill.
So our Amy headed over to @thesnowcentremcr to get a bit of a helping hand (literally - she wouldn't let go of his hand) on the slopes.
Over a two hour beginner lesson here you can learn everything from how to get your skis on, to snow ploughing, to getting back up again after falling over. She even nailed the button lifts. 👌

MYHow to prep kids for their first ski trip.
Before our first family ski holiday, we took the kids to a 30-minute intro session at The Snow Centre in Hemel Hempstead.
It made such a difference.
Not because they suddenly became brilliant skiers —
but because nothing felt completely new on day one.
They’d already:
– Worn ski boots
– Felt how heavy skis are
– Tried sliding
– Got used to the slope environment
That first morning in resort is intense.
Boots.
Helmets.
Gloves.
Layers.
Lesson meeting points.
If they’ve already tried everything on beforehand, it removes so much stress.
This year, we went one step further and booked our youngest a few extra lessons before the trip.
It wasn’t about performance.
It was about confidence.
And confidence at 3 or 4 years old changes everything.
You don’t have to do this.
But if you’re nervous about that first ski morning — it really helps. I would even suggest just trying on all the clothes a few times even if you can’t get the full ski experience in.

FRKnockhatch Ski & Snowboard Centre is such a great find and going in the colder evening definitely helped. The weight guideline (around eight stone) does make a difference on dry slopes, so Vincent will find it easier as he grows.
A private lesson was perfect for them. The fact they wanted to go higher up the slope is such a good sign it means they felt confident and ready for more. The hour always flies when they’re loving it.
If they reopen in October, it’ll be worth booking ahead and building it into your ski holiday prep. It really does feel like a little holiday there.

ARA group of 14 beginner skiers from our Lower School travelled to the Snow Centre in Hemel Hempstead last week to have their first ski lessons - all in preparation for our upcoming Years 7 and 8 ski trip to Italy this coming Easter holiday. We're also running two other ski trips this Easter - one for Shell (also in Italy) and one for Remove (in France). Other Easter trips include a Dance trip to New York and a Latin trip to Rome - we can't wait!
