The 60-30-10 Color Rule That Makes Videos Look Like Real Cinema
Color design is one of the biggest secrets behind a cinematic look. When you control the colors in your frame, the entire mood becomes stronger and more intentional. Start by choosing one dominant color for about sixty percent of the shot. This sets the emotional tone and makes the background feel cohesive. Add a secondary color for around thirty percent to create contrast and keep yourself from blending in. Then include a small pop of ten percent using a bright accent color. That tiny highlight pulls the viewer’s eye instantly. You can see this rule in shows like Stranger Things, Severance, and Pluribus. It is used in movie posters, Hollywood set design, and professional photography because it creates balance, clarity, and visual storytelling. Try the 60-30-10 formula in your next video. It works for Instagram Reels, TikTok videos, YouTube Shorts, portraits, product shots, and any content where color matters. It is one of the simplest ways to create cinematic composition, stronger mood, and more professional visuals. Vertical Videos Composition 🎬 The rule of thirds is a fundamental composition guideline used in various visual arts, including photography and filmmaking While it’s typically discussed in the context of horizontal or landscape-oriented images, the principles can be adapted for vertical or portrait-oriented videos as well✅ The rule divides the frame into nine equal segments by using two vertical and two horizontal lines in a video frame. Traditionally, for horizontal videos, the idea is to position your main subjects or points of interest along the lines shown above or at their intersections, creating a more balanced and engaging composition 🎥 #videography #filmmakers #filmmaking #cinematic #videographer #cinematographer #cinematography #cinematographylife #videographers #videographylife #filmmaker #filmlook

Spot the loop! For those of you interested in how I make a Cinema-graph like the one seen above: 1. Setup Camera on a tripod in whichever orientation you want 2. Place model in front of the moving object and frame up a composition 3. Instruct the model to stay as still as possible 4. My camera settings above were 1/15, f2.8, iso100 5. Snap around 10 photos of the moving object creating motion behind the model at a medium to high burst speed 6. Edit photo’s in uniform to ensure consistency 7. Throw the 10 photos into a video editing media and reduce each photo duration to around 0.02sec 8. Loop! - Plenty of YouTube videos explain further… ask any questions below :) #photographyidea #photographyideas #cinemagraph #cinemagraphs #photographyreel #photography #idea #cinematicphotography #trainphotography #trainphoto #sydneyphotographer #sonyphotographer #reels #creativereels #sonyalphaanz

Every video I shoot starts with composition. I always think about the frame first - how the space is filled, what details are in the shot, and how everything works together. Good composition helps food videos feel more balanced, intentional, and visually appealing. In most of my food reels, I use the same core camera angles: • 45° angle - the most versatile one. It works well for both filming the process and showing the final dish in a flattering way. • Front / slightly behind angle - great for action shots like mixing, adding ingredients, or plating. Having hands in the frame makes the video feel more dynamic and natural. • Top-down (bird’s-eye view) - perfect for flat dishes like pancakes, toasts, pizza, or pastries. It highlights shape, symmetry, and textures. You don’t need a complicated setup or tons of angles. Understanding composition and camera angles alone can really improve your food content - even when filming at home on an iPhone. food videography • food content creation • filming food at home • food reel tips • composition in video • camera angles for food • iphone food video • food styling at home • beginner content creator • behind the scenes food • canadian food creator

Composition in movies is how filmmakers arrange what we see on screen to guide our attention and support the story. The placement of characters, use of space, and balance within the frame can create tension, highlight emotion, or show power. Good composition makes a shot feel meaningful, not just beautiful. #AmazonMGMStudios #AmazonPartner

The art of composition I try to follow these framing/ composition rules to a certain extent when I’m filming. However there are some shots where you can absolutely break these rules. As everyone says “they are just guidelines”. 346.9K I end up using these rules the most when I am in the editing stage and I want one shot to easily fall into the next. For example, I usually mark the point/subject that the eye is focused on, using the rules, I then try to make sure the following shot also has the subject in the same position. Sometimes this isn’t necessary, but it’s a good technique to make sure the viewers/ audiences eye isn’t fighting for what to look at next. Here’s some examples of some traditional composition techniques. #sony #composition #cinematography #filmmaker #editing

Well, many of you asked… So here’s how I did it. The day I posted this, I didn’t have anything planned. So I lazily whipped this little faux cinemagraph together in five minutes… And y’all ate it up! That Reel became the biggest thing that I ever shared on this platform. I can’t explain my feelings towards when things like that happen. I kind of hate it, because it’s so unpredictable to gauge what people will respond to and what will catch traction. But nonetheless, I appreciate the response that you all generously gave. While this is “technically” not a cinemagraph, maybe I’ll show you folks how to make one of those bad boys here soon. •••••••••• Photo captured with @canonusa 5D Mark IV Assets from @motionarray and @soundstripemusic Compiled in @adobe Premiere Pro •••••••••• #enjoythejourney #cinemagraph #videotutorial #tipsandtricks #tutorial #videoediting #editingtips #photoeditingtips #photoediting #cinemagraphtutorial #madewithlightroom #adobe
