Quick breakdown. DOE just handed Georgia Power a record loan package to unlock grid capacity for AI data centers. Not a press release trophy—this is firm power: substation builds, transmission upgrades, and tune-ups on nuclear and gas units to feed hyperscale loads. Why it matters: AI data center interconnections aren’t waiting on land—they’re waiting on deliverable megawatts. Georgia now has a federal backstop to move steel on 230/500 kV work and extend baseload from nuclear into the queue. That shortens timelines for 50–200 MW blocks, stabilizes data center power pricing, and de-risks interconnection for NVIDIA GPU clusters running liquid cooling at 30–80 kW per rack. Operator take: If I were building, I’d target parcels tied to substations benefitting from this spend—within a few miles of 230 kV nodes and any circuits tied to nuclear. Ask for firm service, not best-efforts. Lock water permits early or design for hybrid/dry heat rejection. And if timelines slip, plan a behind-the-meter gas bridge so your interconnection queue date doesn’t kill the campus. We’re building infrastructure in this space right now. Follow for what we’re seeing. #DataCenters #AIInfrastructure #GridCapacity #Interconnection #Nuclear #Substations #NVIDIAGPUs #LiquidCooling #Hyperscale #EnergyMarkets #GeorgiaPower #DataCenterPower #Shorts #Infrastructure #DataCenter

📲 PART 2: Data Centers — And Who Pays Now let’s talk about data centers. 🏭⚡️ They require enormous grid upgrades — transmission lines, substations, generation capacity. The rule should be simple: Cost causer pays the cost. But under current rules, Georgia Power has broad discretion in how it allocates those infrastructure costs. If those costs are shifted — even partially — onto residential customers… Your bill goes up. 📈 We’re being told data center growth will “stabilize rates.” That only works if data centers fully pay for the grid expansion they require. If they don’t — you will. This is why Senate Bill 34 matters. This is why cost allocation matters. This is why oversight matters. High profits. Rising residential bills. Record disconnections. None of that is accidental. Call your state senator. Ask them where they stand on requiring full cost allocation for large load customers. Georgia families should not subsidize billion-dollar industrial expansion. Period. ⚡️ 👉 Take action at GeorgiansForAffordableEnergy.org 💙 @pattydurandgae

Georgia Power wants to spend $16 billion to power massive Big Tech data centers—but they want YOU to foot the bill. We can’t let everyday Georgians pay the price for corporate expansion. Our legislators have a chance to stop these runaway power bills and hold Big Tech accountable. Don’t let them pass the buck to your household. Take Action: Send an email to the legislature today and tell them to protect Georgia families from data center energy hikes! Head over to gcvoters.org to take action.

This decision is going to shape Georgia for decades and not everyone’s happy about it. State regulators approved a $16 billion Georgia Power expansion, largely driven by skyrocketing data-center demand across metro Atlanta. These facilities power AI, cloud storage, and Big Tech operations—and they never shut off. Supporters say this cements Atlanta as a national tech powerhouse and fuels long-term economic growth. Critics argue the risk is being shifted to ratepayers, with concerns about future electricity costs, environmental impact, and infrastructure strain. The real debate isn’t whether data centers are coming, they already are. It’s who carries the cost of powering them. Necessary investment or corporate welfare with a long-term price tag? 👇 Drop your take below.

Now let’s talk about the key term buried in the data center bill: “marginal cost.” ⚡️ The revised legislation promoted by Matt Brass says data centers should cover their marginal cost of electricity. Sounds good. But here’s the problem. In utility economics, marginal cost usually means only the cost of generating one additional unit of electricity. It often does NOT include the massive infrastructure required to serve data centers: ⚠️ New power plants ⚠️ High-voltage transmission lines ⚠️ Substations ⚠️ Pipeline expansions Those projects can cost billions. If those costs aren’t assigned directly to the data centers creating the demand, they can be spread across the entire system. Which means residential customers end up paying part of the bill. 💸 Even more concerning: the supposed “intent” to protect Georgia families wasn’t written directly into the law. It was placed in legislative notes, which courts may consider — but the actual statutory language is what ultimately governs. So the real question is simple: If lawmakers truly want to protect Georgia families from data center costs… Why not write that protection clearly into the law? 👉 Learn more and take action at GeorgiansForAffordableEnergy.org ⚡️

Data center developers are looking for land in Missouri, as state leadership splits to attract more investors from the tech world while protecting Missouri's residents. Several companies have begun the process of investing in the state's data infrastructure, according to the Missouri Department of Economic Development. In Kansas City alone, both Meta and Google have promised upward of $1 billion in investments to build their own centers. 💻🏗️ Data centers are coming to communities across the country — but what does that really mean for your town? These massive facilities power everything from cloud storage to AI. Supporters point to tax revenue and tech investment. Critics warn about energy and water use, environmental impacts, and deals that don’t always benefit residents. So what should communities do before saying yes? Experts say negotiate Community Benefit Agreements (CBAs) — legally binding deals that can require job opportunities for locals, workforce training, environmental protections, transparency on energy and water use, and investments in schools, health, and infrastructure. This isn’t just about servers and technology — it’s about who benefits, who pays the price, and whether communities get a real seat at the table. 📌 What would YOU want negotiated if a data center came to your neighborhood? #DataCenters #CommunityImpact #EconomicDevelopment #TechInfrastructure #LocalGovernment #Zoning #UrbanPlanning #EnvironmentalJustice #WaterUse #EnergyGrid #CommunityBenefits #PublicPolicy #DigitalInfrastructure #TechAndSociety #AIInfrastructure #CommunityVoices

Georgia’s sales tax exemption knocks millions off upfront equipment and build costs. That unlocks marginal sites and pulls procurement forward. But here’s the second-order effect: it drives more megawatt requests into a grid that’s already tight. Substation capacity, transformer lead times, and interconnection studies don’t move faster because taxes go down. Expect longer queues, bigger system upgrades, and rate cases to recover spend. Local governments also trade near-term sales tax for hoped-for property tax and utility buildouts. Schools and municipal budgets feel that gap until the tax base materializes — if it does. And the gating factors don’t change: proximity to 230–500 kV, dual-carrier long-haul fiber, water and air permits for backup generation. Those are scarce. Bottom line: incentives accelerate paperwork, not electrons. If you’re underwriting Georgia, model schedule risk, demand charges, and grid upgrade exposure — not just the tax savings. Virginia is weighing changes to data center taxation, utility oversight, environmental reporting, and local approvals. Sounds incremental. It isn’t. Here’s what actually moves capital. If exemptions narrow or depreciation schedules change, servers become more taxable. That lifts total cost per megawatt, pushes wholesale lease rates up, or pushes new builds to states with steadier regimes. If environmental reporting and local approval steps expand, entitlement timelines stretch. Miss the AI deployment window by six months and the site drops down the priority list. If utility oversight tightens, substation and transmission approvals hit new gates. Interconnection slips; carrying costs rise. If revenue is diverted away from host counties, local political will softens—rezones and special use permits get harder. What matters now: grandfathering for existing campuses, how equipment is depreciated, any exemption sunsets, and clear rules for projects in flight. Policy uncertainty is a risk premium. Capital will chase speed, certainty, and cheap power—wherever that ends up.
