THMeet Danny, our 5 month old clouded leopard cub! We are so excited to have welcomed Danny to The Creature Conservancy last month to be part of our clouded leopard captive breeding program. With less than 10,000 clouded leopards in the wild and only 70 in human care in the United States, genetic diversity is presumably very low. As soon as we acquired Kya, our one and a half year old female, we set out to find an unrelated male to join the nation-wide captive breeding program to ensure that these magnificent cats can continue on. Last month, we were lucky enough to find Danny. Danny is still strictly quarantining and will not be in Kya’s enclosure until we can ensure a safe and slow introduction but don’t worry, we will be sharing plenty of pictures and videos in the meantime.
While captive breeding is essential to researching breeding best practices and building a strong population, even more important is preserving their natural habitat. Danny will not only be serving his species genetically, but he will also be able to educate our community about ways we can help clouded leopard populations. The best thing you can do for Danny and Kya is choose products that are palm oil free or use sustainable practices, spread awareness, and support organizations like ours that fight for clouded leopard populations across the globe.
