All credits to the CMS detector & collaboration! 📸 These event displays are visual representations of particle collisions, reconstructed from signals recorded by the CMS detector. 🎆 In each collision, a variety of particles is born — but here’s the mystery: we don’t yet know exactly what came out. Was it a photon? A muon? Or something more elusive?⚛️ Detecting them precisely needs a multipurpose detector like CMS, with different specialised layers! As these particles pass through the detector, they leave a diverse set of traces, such as energy deposits and a range of particle tracks, all captured with great precision by CMS. But do signals give the full picture? 🤔 Well, not completely! To reconstruct what happens during a collision, our teams take into account the signals that are recorded and imbalances in the detector due to the passage of invisible particles (such as neutrinos)– i.e. what we cannot directly see to create the full picture. All of this is processed and transformed into these stunning images using specialised software! 💻 ⚛️ Which event display do you like the most? The barrel of the new CMS timing detector will consist of thousands of crystal sensors embellished around a cylindrical support structure that is the size of a small research submarine. When a passing particle hits a crystal, it generates a flash of light. This flash is immediately picked up by an attached photomultiplier, which converts the light into an electronic signal, which is then sent to a circuit board and time stamped. According to University of Virginia postdoc Bryan Cardwell, the concept is inherently simple. The complexity arises from the detector’s size and location inside CMS. #cms #hilumilhc #physics #particlephysics #science #cern #darkmatter

One of the most complex machines ever built to study reality. The Compact Muon Solenoid, or CMS, is one of the main experiments at CERN’s Large Hadron Collider. CMS is a general purpose particle detector designed to study what matter is made of and how forces behave at the smallest scales. It surrounds collision points where protons smash together at near light speed. Layer by layer, the detector tracks particles, measures their energy, and records their paths. CMS played a key role in the discovery of the Higgs boson in 2012. The experiment continues to search for new particles, hidden dimensions, and physics beyond current theories. It is less a single instrument and more a giant, three dimensional camera for the subatomic world.

The LHC is preparing to enter a new era ✨ @CERN's High-Luminosity LHC upgrade will increase the number of collisions by a factor of 10, opening the door to unprecedented precision. And the CMS detector is leveling up right alongside it. Fermilab recently finished production of 150,000 scintillator tiles for the @CMSexperiment detector upgrade — and we couldn't be more proud of the role we're playing in the future of high-energy physics. #Fermilab #CERN #HiLumiLHC #LHCupgrade #ParticlePhysics

A machine helped find the Higgs boson. The CMS detector at CERN played a key role in discovering this fundamental particle. It tracks countless collisions, picking out the rare events that reveal new physics. This breakthrough confirmed theories about how particles get mass and opened a new chapter in understanding the universe. Could machines like this unlock even more cosmic secrets? #science #tech #physics

*EDIT* ⓵ A splash event is a deliberate, high-energy shot of a single Large Hadron Collider (LHC) beam into a collimator, located upstream from the detector. The resulting collision generates a shower of muons, which are then used to calibrate and synchronize the CMS detector's various sub-detectors, including the calorimeters and muon detection systems. This process allows scientists to verify that the detector is functioning correctly by ensuring that the channels can be aligned in time and space. ⓶ Proton-proton collisions at injection energy are low-energy collisions, such as the 450 GeV or 900 GeV collisions at the CERN LHC, that are not directly used for physics investigation but instead serve to calibrate and synchronize the LHC detectors after a period of maintenance or before high-energy runs. These "tuning collisions" allow experimental teams to verify the correct operation, alignment, and precise timing of the detectors' various sensors and equipment to ensure they can accurately record data from the much higher-energy collisions. ⓷ A 13.6 TeV proton-proton collision refers to the high-energy collisions of protons at the LHC, which produce subatomic particles allowing physicists to study the fundamental nature of matter. Researchers analyze the data from these collisions to search for new particles, probe the Standard Model of particle physics, and develop new experimental techniques. ⓸ A proton-proton collision during "high pile-up fill" describes a scenario where many individual proton-proton collisions occur within a single, very short crossing of two proton bunches. This "pile-up" results in an overwhelming amount of particles and detector "hits" from these multiple simultaneous collisions, making it challenging to isolate and analyze the signals from the specific collision of interest. #fundamentalparticles #particlephysics #detectors #france #switzerland #nuclearfacility #CERN #nuclearphysics #impulse #mechanics Source: @cmsexperiment #enhanceyourideas
