JEWhile out tidepooling at night last week, my friend Beth noticed three separate clusters of one of my favorite seaweeds, Codium fragile. It’s commonly called Deadman’s Fingers, Staghorn Seaweed, or Felty Fingers.
This is a seaweed I see regularly at certain spots on the Olympic Peninsula, but on San Juan Island I’d only ever seen one tiny clump—until this past year. During the summer, my friend Katie pointed out a little cluster off a local dock and then, last autumn while dockfouling, I found another good-sized cluster growing off the side of a different dock. And now these three small growths have appeared in the intertidal near my island home.
One of the clusters had these knobby bumps on it, and I’m trying to figure out whether those are reproductive structures or simply the beginnings of new branches. If you know more, I’d love to hear your thoughts—please weigh in!

INSea sacks are far more therapeutic!
Sea sacks (Halosaccion glandiforme) are a species of reg algae in the North Pacific, found in the intertidal zone. They are most known, & loved, for what you see in this video. If you squeeze one, water will shoot out from pores that are all over the algae. These pores are so water can flow in/out of the thallus (body) which allows the algae stay moist when tide goes out, helping it survive until the tide comes back in. One of the many amazing intertidal species adaptations!

EVAcross the tropical Atlantic and western Pacific, massive mats of seaweed and macroalgae are expanding rapidly, at about 13.4% per year over the past two decades far faster than expected. These huge floating blooms are linked to warming ocean temperatures and increased nutrient pollution from runoff and other sources, reshaping ocean ecosystems.
Researchers say this trend could signal a regime shift in the marine environment where vast areas once low in macroalgae are becoming rich with it, potentially altering food webs, water chemistry, and habitat structures beneath the surface.
From satellite maps to coastal sightings, seaweed blooms are no longer isolated events they’re proliferating worldwide, raising questions about how human-driven change is transforming the oceans we depend on.
As our seas warm and nutrients flow from land into water, the seaweed story is becoming a powerful reminder: ocean health is changing and we’re part of the reason why.

LII looooove identifying and foraging for seaweed on the Oregon coast. 🌱 🔍 I found Sea Lettuce and Alaria on the beach in Port Orford at low tide yeasterday. The seaweed harvesting season starts March 1st and I highly recommend you do a bit of research and get out there. 🌊 Or, take one of Alanna’s seaweed foraging classes - check them out over at @shifting_tides_nw. I learned everything I know from her. 💚

GE🌿 Found something much taller than me — and yes, I’m always impressed.
Seaweed like can grow up to 30–60 cm per day in the right conditions. Faster than most land plants, without fresh water, fertilizer, or soil. Just sunlight and seawater doing their thing.
Standing there holding it, you start to understand why people are paying attention.
This isn’t just “beach stuff.” Seaweed supports fisheries, creates habitat, buffers shorelines, absorbs carbon, and is now turning up in food, skincare, agriculture, textiles, and yes, even beer. It’s one of the few resources that can grow quickly, responsibly, and in a way that strengthens coastal communities instead of stripping them.
When people talk about the blue economy, this is what I picture.
✨️Real organisms. Real coastlines. Real opportunity.✨️
And for that opportunity to grow well, everyday people need to understand what they’re looking at. Not in a policy-paper way — just in a curious, grounded, beach-walk kind of way.

EVHidden beneath shallow coastal waters lies one of the most powerful ecosystems on Earth seagrass meadows.
Often overlooked, seagrass is not seaweed but a true flowering plant that forms vast underwater meadows across the world’s coastlines. These ecosystems are among the most productive on the planet, providing shelter, food, and nursery grounds for countless marine species including fish, turtles, seahorses, and dugongs.
But seagrass does something even more extraordinary.
It acts as a major blue carbon sink, capturing and storing carbon up to 35 times faster than tropical rainforests. By stabilizing seabeds, improving water quality, and protecting coastlines from erosion, seagrass meadows quietly support both marine biodiversity and global climate balance.
Yet these vital habitats are disappearing rapidly due to coastal development, pollution, bottom trawling, and warming oceans.
When seagrass is lost, the carbon stored in its sediments is released back into the atmosphere accelerating climate change and weakening marine ecosystems.
Protecting seagrass means protecting biodiversity, climate stability, and the future of our oceans.
