Made Collagraphs with my 1st Graders. These were inspired by a geometric shape landscape of Grant Wood (mainly known for his iconic painting of American Gothic). We just glued the cut outs on the back so there’s no frustration of paper slipping and sliding around. Did a lesson with cut out shape template for this in my TPT shop. The word collagraph comes from collage, and to make one you just have to create a raised surface with a collage of materials. You can use cardboard shapes, bottle tops, craft foam, and anything that you can roll ink on top and press down onto paper. To make simple collagraphs, you can offer cardboard and peel-and-stick craft foam sheets to cut our own shapes, or foam stickers to create patterns and designs. We used real printing ink in this video, but you can use tempera paint and foam rollers for a comparable experience. In this class, we’ll replace traditional collage with wax to create collagraphs to print from. We’ll be using Elise Wagner’s handmade @print_wax, recently AP approved as a new art material product by the Arts & Crafts Materials Institute (@acmiart ), to emboss textiles, fabric, string, and more. Then, we’ll print with non-toxic soy and honey-based @akuainks on Japanese Kozo paper. Another monoprint using a foil covered card takeaway lid as a plate, this time playing with wiping a lot of the ink away to leave the subject in focus. I had lots of lovely interest and questions from my last post so I’ll cover some of the main points again here for you just in case: Equipment used: - takeaway container lid - basically a foil coated card and yes you can reuse it a few times if you’re gentle 👍🏻 - Ink from Charbonnel - Paynes Grey etching/relief oil based - but any that’s thick enough to work with and not dry out quickly will work - paper type unknown as an old off cut but its quite thick so has some give to it when going through the press - I’ve soaked it in water for around 15 minutes and then blotted it touch dry to get that embossed edge - plus I think it prints slightly better than dry 🤷‍♀️ #slowmade #originalart #printmaking #monoprint #artworkinprogress #monoprinting #monotype #handdrawn #artandmemory #retroarmchair #oneofakindart #artlovers
