COMMANDO CRAWLING IS NORMAL 💕⁠⁠ ⁠⁠ “Commando crawling” is a type of crawling style that really bothers some people for some reason. ⁠⁠ ⁠⁠ And it shouldn't. ⁠⁠ ⁠⁠ Because commando crawling (or crawling on the belly) is often a pre-cursor to 4-point crawling and many many babies will crawl like this before popping up onto all fours all by themselves. ⁠⁠ When they are ready. They need a little time and practice to figure it out. ⁠⁠ Some babies may never four point crawl. And to be honest, that's okay. ⁠⁠ ⁠⁠ Would it bother me you ask?⁠⁠ ⁠⁠ Well, my first baby commando crawled for ages, and initially I did nothing about it.....I wanted to see if he would work it out on his own. But after 2 months I decided I'd like to help him out, because I'm a paed physio and I had all the tricks up my sleeve anyway. ⁠⁠ ⁠⁠ And after another month, 4 point crawl he did. ⁠⁠ ⁠⁠ Was it because I nudged him along with some exercises? ⁠⁠ ⁠⁠ I couldn't tell you. But I'm glad that I did, because it felt good to support him. ⁠⁠ ⁠ Exercises⁠ ⁠ ✔️playing in kneeling (e.g at a toy box)⁠ ⁠ ✔️climbing stairs ⁠ ⁠ ✔️climbing over you, whilst you lie on the floor ⁠ ⁠ ✔️climbing up and down from a mattress on the floor ⁠ ⁠ ✔️propping in all fours over your leg ⁠ ⁠ ✔️propping in all fours on a slope ⁠ In doing these exercises you are still letting bub “figure it out’ you’re just supporting them along the way. ⁠⁠ If you would like to help support your baby through their gross motor development, head on over to my website or Insta shop and check out my 10 step baby development program 'My Strong Little Body' ⁠⁠for more detail on the above exercises and about 95 more nurturing bub through all the major developmental milestones. 🥰 ⁠⁠ Got any questions? Babies come up with the funniest ways to get from point A to point B! But here’s the thing: while these unique crawling styles are adorable, a true hands-and-knees crawl (also called quadruped crawling) plays a big role in your baby’s development. 14 years ago, when my son had his own signature scoot, we didn’t think much of it. We figured he’d grow out of it—and he did, eventually walking just fine. But after 15 years working in movement rehab, I’ve learned how critical crawling in a cross-body pattern is for the brain, spine, and fine motor skills. Now, my youngest is doing the same scoot-crawl, and this time, I’m more intentional. Instead of just watching and hoping he’ll figure it out, we’ve turned it into a fun game with gentle guidance using a homemade crawling track inspired by the Doman Method. Why is four-point crawling so important? It strengthens the connection between the left and right sides of the brain. It builds core, shoulder, and hip stability. It lays the groundwork for fine motor skills like handwriting, balance, and coordination. If your baby is scooting, shuffling, or army-crawling, don’t stress—it’s more common than you think. And there’s a lot you can do to support their movement in a playful, engaging way! Ada beberapa jenis merangkak yang sering kita lihat: 🟡 Commando Crawl / Army Crawl Bayi merangkak dengan dada menempel lantai, dan mendorong badan dengan tangan dan kaki. Mirip tentara merayap. 🟢 Classic Crawl Merangkak dengan kedua tangan dan lutut, gaya yang paling "umum". 🔵 Bear Crawl Pantat lebih tinggi, bayi pakai tangan dan kaki (bukan lutut) buat maju. 🟠 Crab Crawl Bayi malah mundur! Did your child crawl? Did they skip crawling? Crawling is still a very important skill as it helps with retained primitive reflexes like STNR (symmetrical tonic neck reflex). Studies have shown that kids who have not integrated the STNR reflex have difficulty with eye/hand coordination. This can cause problems with bringing food to mouth and with handwriting down the road. ~ Does your child only commando crawl or have a “lopsided” crawl? These can be signs of trunk tightness as well as retained reflexes. ~ I have been certified in TMR TOTS also known as Total Motion Release. The concept is easy and I’ve had tons of success treating torticollis and hemiplegia. Basically, we don’t want to hurt kids when we stretch, right? So we stretch to the easy side. I’m doing a lower body twist in the second slide. I twist to the easy side and hold for 4-5 minutes and then the child is better able to move to the more difficult side.
