4.5-5 hour hike with a view 🥾🏔️ 10.9km 693m Elevation gain “The trail is easy to navigate for the most part and is well maintained. There are a couple of ropes available for assistance in steeper sections. The first and last 1.5 kilometres to the summit are the most challenging and steep, and higher up there is no shade from trees. After the initial 1.5 kilometres, the trail flattens out for a while before the final push to the summit. From the top there are lovely views into Strathcona Park.” @alltrails What’s your favourite hike on the island? Residents of a Comox Valley trailer park have been given notice that the place they call home, some for more than 40 years, is closing. The trailer park sits on K'omoks First Nation traditional land, and earlier this month residents were told that in January of 2028 the Nation will be repurposing the land for housing for its members. #ctvnewsvancouverisland #bcnews #firstnations

Fun fact: a tour of our Comox Valley campus will take you for a (roughly) 1.5km walk. Your tour guide will show you through the buildings where classes, labs and helpful offices (such as career services, assessments or admissions) are. You’ll get to peek inside classrooms and find out where to access resources for students. While we used the stairs for this tour, there are elevators in each building. If you come on a tour while the cafeteria is open you could stop for a snack thanks to @lushvalleyfood and their new cafe! Our next campus tour at the Comox Valley campus is Friday, February 13 at 3pm. Register for free online or just show up. Look for Sarah (the tour guide in this video) outside of Discovery Hall.

People living in a trailer park in the Comox Valley say they’re being evicted unfairly by the K’omoks First Nation. The First Nation has given notice that residents at the Queneesh Mobile Home park have less than two years to move off the property. “There’s no place to move our trailers to on the Island. We are stuck. We have put our life savings into this trailer, and now we have to leave with nothing. That is ludicrous,” said Kathy Jenkins, a park resident of 34 years.

🚨 A First Nations band has just evicted over 100 families from a Comox Valley trailer park. They have only 2 years to get out and get zero compensation for their trailers. These people are completely screwed. They thought Queneesh Mobile Home Park was their forever home. Now they’re staring at insane moving costs and most are walking away with nothing after sinking their life savings. “There’s no place to move our trailers to on the Island. We are stuck. We have put our life savings into this trailer, and now we have to leave with nothing. That is ludicrous,” says Kathy Jenkins after 34 years there. Don Cropley (18 years) hits it dead on: “I’m just really appalled at the First Nations for deciding to develop this land when they have a whole bunch of other tracts of land and they’ve chosen to displace all us people.” 37 trailers. Over 100 people. Some still owe big mortgages, one woman still owes $80,000. All because the 50-year lease isn’t getting renewed. As a realtor of 12 years I’ve always thought this form of ownership was ridiculous. I’ve never advised anyone to buy it. I always told buyers I do not expect these leases to be renewed. Property values go higher and the tribes can build whatever they want without zoning or permits. This is the ridiculous nature of it. This isn’t one park. Trailer parks and housing communities all over Canada sit on these native leasehold lands. When the band wants it back, they just don’t renew and you’re done. These people are screwed. Even worse, the band offered to waive pad rent for that time but nothing, not one dollar, for the trailers themselves, which cost a minimum of 20k+ just to get them off the property. And even then, there’s literally nowhere you can put them because on regular land you don’t get permission to even have more than one trailer on a property. The native tribes play by completely opposite rules. We let them charge Canadians rent and sell ownership on land they hold under special privileged rules, not fee simple title like everyone else, then act shocked when they take it back. This can happen anywhere. Fair deal or complete bullshit? Drop it below. 👇

Day two of my tour of Vancouver Island started at the beautiful Cathedral Grove, where I saw our investments in conservation and improvements to accessible trails. I love being outdoors, so it was great to be with my colleagues @tamaradavidsonbc, @josie_osborne and @dana4jdfm to see all the progress that has been made. In Courtenay, I met with Fire Chiefs from across the Comox Valley to discuss improvements to our volunteer firefighter tax credit and thank them for all their work to keep people safe. Great work is happening at Island TimberFrame in Cumberland as they ramp up local manufacturing and exports. In challenging times for our forestry sector, I was so glad to see our investment in the company allowing them to hire more workers and expand their business. Special thanks to the team at the Comox Valley Record for sitting down with me to discuss investments in healthcare and ways we are growing BC’s economy.
