Stop Throwing Away Food Scraps — Bury Them Instead 🌱♻️ Don’t throw away your food scraps—bury them! This quick trench composting method turns peels, cores, coffee grounds, and eggshells into rich soil right in your garden. Just dig, add, and cover (and skip meat, dairy, and oily foods). #TrenchComposting #CompostingTips #GardenHacks #OrganicGardening #SoilHealth

Composting made easy 🌱 I use a sprinkler valve in each corner of my raised garden boxes. I fill them with kitchen scraps and let the decomposers in my soil do the rest. Each corner becomes its own self-feeding compost system (it's actually called Vermicomposting) — no turning, no pile, no extra work. When one valve is full, I move to the next corner. It takes a couple of weeks to break down, so by the time I circle back, it’s ready for more scraps. ✨ Don’t overthink composting. Do what works for your garden and what’s easiest for your setup. Would you try this method? If this was helpful, follow for more simple, practical garden tips 🌿 I design, install, and teach vegetable gardens — I’m so glad you’re here 💚 #kitchengardensbykim #gardencoach #backyardgarden #composting #gardencompost

I always get asked what can actually go in a worm farm - and the answer is a fair amount! 🪱 I much prefer worm farms for breaking down food waste rather than traditional composters as they do it far quicker and reduce the risk of rodents - which is another thing that is a top concern! I can honestly say that I’ve never had rodents anywhere near my compost bins or worm farms, and I think it’s because of that! #composting #wormfarm #wormcompost #gardening #gardeningtips

A lot of what people call maintenance is actually interruption. The earth already knows how to rebuild itself if we stop interfering at every stage. Composting 🪱 Home composting is one of the standout BEST things I do for my garden and for the environment: to reduce food waste, make gardening cheaper, and help my plants thrive. I first started composting about 10 years ago and I’ve learnt SO much in that time (like the rest of gardening, it’s all trial and error). And turning things I might otherwise throw away into something incredible I can use in the garden never grows old! I’m actually a little bit obsessed. What goes in my composter: 🥔 Food waste/kitchen scraps 🪴 Garden waste: prunings, deadheads, twigs 🍂 Leaves 🫖 Tea bags ☕️ Coffee grounds (I collect these from a local supermarket) 🥚 Egg shells 🏷️ Cardboard 📝 Brown paper This produces me an amazing homegrown compost that I can use as a mulch, as a potting mix or to start off my seedlings. This helps me to: 🥦 Reduce food waste 💧 Lock in soil moisture 🪱 Improve soil structure 🚀 Supercharge plant growth naturally ♻️ Close the food loop 💰 Save money Basically I’m able to regenerate my soil and create NEW food and flowers from all the other ones I put into the compost bin (that would otherwise go in a waste bin!)! Isn’t that amazing?! 🤩 The hot bin is one of three composting solutions I have in the garden. I also have a conventional plastic composter, an a bokashi bin which breaks down food waste and creates me a nutritious plant feed (the hot bin also creates a feed for me!). There’s honestly a solution for all spaces. #Compost #Composting #ReduceReuseRecycle #ZeroWaste #SustainableGardening

If you’re new to hot composting you may feel like a miracle has occurred when you see billows of steam rising from your compost. Well, this heat is actually produced as a by-product of the microbes getting to work breaking down your waste. The amount of heat depends on the size of the pile, or volume of your bin, its moisture content, aeration, & C:N ratio. Decomposition occurs most rapidly during the thermophilic stage of composting (40-60°C), which occurs around 24-36 hours after setting up your new hot compost bin or pile. This period can last for several weeks depending on the size of your pile & your mix of ingredients. In my 400L compost bin it generally lasts for two weeks. This stage is really important for destroying pathogens, fly larvae & weed seeds your compost needs to be 60°C for at least 7 consecutive days to guarantee this. It’s important to note that compost invertebrates (some of the good guys who eat your waste) survive the thermophilic stage by moving to the edges of the pile or becoming dormant. But most species of microorganisms cannot survive at temperatures above 65°C, so it’s important to turn or aerate really hot compost to bring the temperature down. As your compost begins to cool, turning the pile usually will result in a new temperature peak because of the replenished oxygen supply & the exposure of organic matter not yet thoroughly decomposed. After the thermophilic phase, the compost temperature drops, & is not restored by turning or mixing. This is totally normal and to be expected, so don’t get too disappointed when this happens. At this point, decomposition is taken over by mesophilic microbes through a long process of "curing" or maturation. Although the compost temperature is close to the ambient environmental temps during the curing phase, chemical reactions continue to occur that make the remaining organic matter more stable & suitable for your plants. So be patient & you’ll end up with beautiful black gold for your garden. If you want to get hot, steamy & dirty too check out the IGTV called “How to: Hot Compost”.🔥 #compost #hotcompost #composting

Not because composting is bad. But because I got tired of waiting for my own nutrients. Instead of babysitting a bin, turning piles, and wondering if it was “ready,” I started burying our kitchen scraps right where I plan to plant. Peels, coffee grounds, egg shells, leftovers from chopping veggies straight into the soil. Covered. Forgotten and here’s the part no one talks about enough: When you bury your scraps through fall and winter, spring planting becomes stupidly easy. No scrambling to add compost. No hauling bags. No last-minute soil panic. You just plant. Because the soil has already been fed. The microbes already did the work. The nutrients are already there. It’s composting and soil prep in one step. Future-you will thank past-you every single time you drop a seed in the ground. This is the lowest-effort gardening shift I’ve ever made and I’m never going back to a bin. If you want to learn how to do this safely, simply, and in a way that actually improves your soil long-term comment SOIL

🌱 Build a Hugelkultur Raised Garden Bed – The Natural Way to Grow More Layering cardboard, logs, branches, grass clippings, and rich soil isn’t just filling a bed — it’s building a living ecosystem. Hugelkultur works by creating a natural composting core inside your raised bed. The wood slowly breaks down over time, retaining moisture, feeding beneficial microbes, and releasing nutrients directly to your plants. ✔️ Better water retention ✔️ Healthier soil structure ✔️ Less watering needed ✔️ Long-term fertility ✔️ Stronger, more resilient plants It’s not just gardening. It’s building soil the way nature does. 🌿 Would you try this method in your backyard? #Hugelkultur #RaisedGardenBed #OrganicGardening #GrowYourOwnFood #SustainableLiving
