All couples fight. But contempt—eye-rolling, mockery, sneering—is the relationship killer. The healthiest couples maintain a 5:1 ratio of positive to negative interactions. Have you seen contempt show up? (Research: Gottman & Levenson, 1992) #relationshipadvice #gottman #contempt

There is nothing wrong with communicating needs, boundaries and desires. But, how you communicate them determines whether you build connection or create pressure and compliance. Guilt-tripping sounds like:
“A good husband would…”
“If you loved me, you’d…”
“Other men do this.”
“I shouldn’t have to ask.”
“I guess I just care more than you.” This is communication through judgment. It makes the other person feel "wrong", less than, accused, and compared. It attacks identity instead of expressing desire and vulnerability. This is communication from the wound of judgement, which is based in guilt and ideas of what you and others "should or shouldn't do". Accountability is what we want to communicate with. It's neutral and self focused. It sounds like:
“I want more intentional time together.”
“I feel disconnected lately.”
“Romance is important to me, and I need more of it.” This invites collaboration and curiosity rather than guilt and compliance. If someone is responding because they feel like a bad partner, that’s not romance. That’s pressure. Healthy communication doesn’t require making someone wrong. It requires vulnerability. Needs are valid. Judgment isn’t. And guilt is not accountability — it’s judgment in disguise. If you’ve ever found yourself on either side of this dynamic, pause. Ask yourself: Am I expressing a need… or am I trying to force change through wrongness? That awareness is where healthier love starts 📚The Inner Work of Relationships book - If you want to heal your relationship and build better communication skills, you can get The Inner Work of Relationships book on Amazon and IG shop! #manipulative #relationshipadvice #judgement #redflags #conflictresolution #dating #relationships

Contempt Is Quietly Killing Your Relationship… It doesn’t always look dramatic. Sometimes it sounds like, “I’m good. You’re bad.” Contempt isn’t just frustration — it’s superiority. And when that mindset creeps in, connection slowly dies. You start trying to control. Through tone. Through yelling. Through subtle jabs. And instead of creating closeness… it pushes your partner further away. The scary part? We say contempt is wrong — but often live it out daily without recognizing it. 💡 Contempt creates emotional distance 💡 Control destroys connection 💡 Tone and nonverbal cues matter more than you think 💡 Closeness requires humility, not superiority If you’ve ever thought, “Why am I the only one trying?” — this conversation might challenge you in the best way. 🎧 Watch the full conversation on emotional contempt, control in marriage, and rebuilding connection in the latest Marriage IQ episode. 🎙️ Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/episode/5SRQIISQWzCMJCu7byUxuB?si=q3GIZ06zRPKk-a7uMZGE4A 🍎 Apple Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/episode-119-emotional-hypocrisy-is-fueling-marital/id1745103876?i=1000750148432 ▶️ YouTube: https://youtu.be/JL0xzOdyqZo #MarriageAdvice #RelationshipCommunication #ContemptInMarriage #HealthyMarriage #CouplesCommunication #MarriagePodcast #RelationshipGrowth #EmotionalIntelligence #MarriageTips #MarriageIQ

📖Comment "Link" for The Inner Work of Relationships book. Check your DM requests after ❤️🙏🏼 Weaponized incompetence is a common relationship pattern that creates alot of frustration and resentment between partners. Anyone on the receiving end of weaponized incompetence is justified in their frustration - but if you really want to create healthy change - you have to learn how to share this frustration in a healthy and constructive way. This doesn't mean you suppress your emotions or just allow the behavior to happen - it means you aim to avoid blame, attacking their character, and conveying true contempt. Contempt will destroy conversations and trust quicker than anything else. So the goal is to stay honest, objective, and focused on how to repair so this doesn't happen again. In this video Ash stays honest by conveying how triggered this makes her feel but she stays self-focused and objective to how his behavior has increased her mental load and overall emotional state. She doesn't draw extremes or attack his character. Her tone is true to her feelings but also calm and grounded. This type of reaction is non-threatening and focused on emotions rather than accusations. This will set your partner up to take accountability because your are not creating a conversation that makes them feel like they have to defend themselves. Now it's still important to know that their reaction is completely their responsibility. And if you have an accountable partner, they will be open to seeing the effect their behavior has on you and work to take responsibility to learn and contribute to specific tasks. And this is where you can kindly set boundaries and create the opportunity to walk through tasks they need to know. 📚The Inner Work of Relationships book - if you want to learn communication skills like this, how to heal unhealthy patterns, and how to co-create a conscious and connected relationship - you can read The Inner Work of Relationships book.
