At Perch Hill our cutting beds, pots and borders all benefit from natural supports that we put in place at the start of the year. From birch teepees for sweet peas, to twine and chestnut fencing for the dahlia beds, everything is natural, really strong, and absolutely vital for an abundant, productive and beautiful garden. These two tall planters were looking tired… so it was time for a refresh 🌿 Because they sit close to the house in a north-east facing garden, they’re mostly shade — so every plant had to earn its place. Here’s the simple formula I always use: ✔ Evergreen structure ✔ Shade-loving fillers ✔ A trailing plant to soften the edges Right plant, right place — and everything starts to fall into place 🏡 Let me know if you need help choosing the right plants for your containers — drop me a comment below 👇 For the full tutorial, check out the video on YouTube — you’ll find the link in the YouTube highlights on my profile. #BloomingScotland #WorkingWithNature #GardenDesign #GardenMaintenance #Scotland

So the Buddleia's have all had their late winter/early spring hard prune back. Last year i was too gentle with them, this was a mistake, they got big and unruly! So this year i have cut them back hard in the hope that they don't take over the border. They are fabulous for pollinators so they have their place just need to be slightly more restricted on the space they take up. #diaryofanamateurgardener #gardeningofinstagram #gardensofinstagram #gardening #pruning

Welcome to plant school, lesson one! 🌿 The wonder that is Hazel! I thought I’d start a new little series of very short talking through some wildlife friendly plants in simple terms, getting in as many bug and animal facts as I can, telling you through why they’re so great in the garden, and how you can use them 🌱Starting with hazel because it seemingly does it all! 🐿️ #wildlifegarden #naturefriendlygardening #gardeninguk #gardenbeginners #plantschool

Want to keep your Buddleja, Verbena, and Curry Plant looking their best? Here’s how we maintain them: Buddleja – Cut back hard to encourage strong new growth and plenty of flowers. Remove any dead or weak stems. Verbena – Lightly trim after flowering to keep it tidy and encourage repeat blooms. Leave some structure over winter for added interest. Curry Plant (Helichrysum) – Give it a gentle trim to keep its shape compact and prevent it from becoming woody. Avoid cutting into old, hard stems. A little maintenance goes a long way in keeping your border healthy and balanced #GardenOnARoll #GardenMaintenance #Buddleja #Verbena #Helichrysum #UKGardens

I really love the ‘what to do now’ section in the @gardenersworldmag as it keeps me on track for jobs each month and explains clearly what to do! Today, I managed to complete cutting back and moving the Salvia, finishing off with some mulch in my continued effort to improve the soil in my new build garden 🪏 I wouldn’t personally divide this variety of Salvia because it is quite woody stemmed, so semi -ripe cuttings are your best bet which I took in the Autumn! Yes I garden in my crocs and yes I filmed over two days hence the change of clothing, because I’m a busy mum of 2 🤣🙋🏼‍♀️ Job for the winter, herbaceous perennials, gardening, salvia

4 plant supports for your garden 🌱 I rely on supports in my garden to help make sure the plants look the absolute best, whatever the weather. I tend to go for metal ones because they form a patina which then naturally blends in with the garden. They are so useful for stopping flowers from snapping, making sure plants don’t flop over and keeping helping them to stay in shape. My favourites are: •Single stem plant supports. These are really useful for individual flower stems such as foxgloves, stocks and some larkspur. Useful in windy weather. •Edging hoops I use these along the edge of the main border. They look smart but they also add a little support to plants like Erigeron and hardy geraniums. •Border arcs I have lots of these in various heights. They’re useful for heavier perennials with larger stems and branches, I’ve used them with knautia, hydrangea and bushy salvias. •Twist/ spiral supports These are so useful to add above your perennials at the start of spring so the plants grow up through them. They’re useful because as you twist them they gather up and tighten around any leaves and stems. I find they’re useful for multi stemmed flowers like gaura, delphiniums, cosmos and penstemon. Everything really. •I also have some metal stakes which are really useful in lots of different situations. Do you use plant supports in your garden? Are there any I need to try? Remember to save this reel and send to a gardening friend. All support bought by me! #Gardeningadvice #gardeningtipsforbeginners #cottagegardenflowers #plantsupports #perennialflowers

I’m trying some new low level ground cover plants in my own hedgerow bed. I’m seeing how well Ajuga and Saxifraga cover and spread. They are recommended for areas of partial shade, and should provide some colour and suppress the weeds that come though under there. I will update how these get on in a few months time when the spring has fully arrived.
