LUOver the weekend @themakercamp I caught up with my friend @ian.mc_carthy who showed me how he tin lines copper vessels. Copper pots and pans are great for cooking as copper has superior heat conductivity leading to rapid even heating and precise temperature control. But you shouldn’t cook in an unlined copper vessel, unlined copper can leach toxic copper into food, especially with acidic ingredients like tomatoes and lemon juice, so it must have a protective, non-reactive lining, typically tin or stainless steel. Older pots and pans often have worn tin linings and may need to get relined. Well this is basically how it is done. Ian makes it look easy as he lines this raised vessel that he made. Heat the copper vessels, add flux, more heat until the flux boils then add tin. The two combine and the tin melts. It’s then able to be spread around the interior to coat the copper using fiberglass. The tin wont stick to the fiberglass and will adhere to the copper. Pretty neat. Thanks for the demo Ian! Thanks to maker camp for bringing so many artisans and makers together for a great weekend!
