Watch this cuttlefish change colours! Australian giant cuttlefish have special skin cells called chromatophores that allow them to change the colour of their skin at will. This male cuttlefish has spotted a female behind me, and is signalling for her to follow him to his den by turning his skin purple. She accepted the invitation and mated together there! . . . . . Watch as this beautiful giant cuttlefish glides past me! Cuttlefish have a pair of undulating fins running along the sides of their bodies. These fins wave in coordinated, rippling motions that allow precise control over movement. It’s sort of like a drone using gentle propellers to stay stable whilst gliding. With its UFO-like display, this cuttlefish may look like it’s trying to get attention—but its intent is anything but. The undulating black stripes confuse prey, making the creatures all but invisible to crabs and other victims, researchers report today in Science Advances. The discovery is the first known example of an animal masking with this specific type of motion camouflage to hunt. To learn more, click the link in our bio. Have you ever seen what happens when multiple Australian Giant Cuttlefish are in proximity together….. THIS!!! I was lucky enough to see two together this week. Using cells called chromatophores these beauties can put on colourful displays that rival Sydney’s Vivid light show. If I hadn’t put music to this video clip you would hear me say the largest “wow” underwater…. I can’t wait to see even more of when their breeding season officially starts in May….never been so excited for winter 💙. I am so grateful for these awesome moments. #cuttlefish #giantcuttlefish #sepiaapama #cabbagetreebay #ocean #diving #freediving #manly #gopro #goproanz #onlyone #octonation #theocean

We’ve got a real cutie for this week’s #SpeciesSpotlight – the #BobtailSquid 🦑 - Bobtail squid are a group of #cephalopods related to #cuttlefish but they have a rounder mantle and no cuttlebone - These guys are actually pretty small – about the size of your thumb 👍 - They have very clever stealth techniques to protect from predators - they use bioluminescent glowing bacteria within their bodies to camouflage themselves by mimicking the moonlight at night and eliminating their own shadows - During the day they stay concealed in the sand. If disturbed they try to blend in by keeping a layer of sand on top of them. If this fails, they release a cloud of ink and leave behind a blob of ink and sand in their shape to help them escape - They can swim by either using the fins on their mantle or by jet propulsion - They’re nicknamed “dumpling squid” because well, they look like little dumplings 💙 Many thanks to @jacobguy.media for his fantastic video #MarineBiology #SquidsOfInstagram #FunFacts #MarineConservation #UnderwaterVideo

Cuttlefish are fascinating marine creatures with unique features. Here are five intriguing facts about them: 1. Masters of Camouflage: Cuttlefish can change the color, pattern, and texture of their skin almost instantly to blend into their surroundings. They achieve this using specialized skin cells called chromatophores, iridophores, and leucophores. This ability helps them evade predators and communicate with other cuttlefish. 2. Highly Intelligent: Cuttlefish are among the most intelligent invertebrates. They have large brains relative to their body size and can solve complex problems, remember past events, and even plan for the future—a skill known as “episodic-like memory.” 3. Hypnotic Hunting Technique: When hunting prey, cuttlefish often use their skin’s flashing color displays to confuse or mesmerize their targets, making them easier to catch. This tactic is particularly effective on small fish and crustaceans. 4. Unique Internal Structure: Cuttlefish have a unique internal shell called the cuttlebone, which helps them control buoyancy. The cuttlebone contains small chambers filled with gas, allowing them to float at various depths in the water. 5. Short but Impactful Life: Cuttlefish have relatively short lifespans, usually ranging from 1 to 2 years. During this time, they exhibit remarkable behavior, including complex mating rituals where males display vibrant colors to attract females and ward off rivals. . . . . . . . #cuttlefish #cuttle #big #camouflage #gorgeous #chill #majestic #gopro #beautiful #fish #natgeo #nature #naturelovers #naturephotography #love #life #lovelife #foryou #foryourpage #trending #viral #ocean #scubadiving #diving #goodvibes #sea #favorite #calm
