Things I stopped doing on my bleed 🩸🙅🏼‍♀️ Here is why: 1. Working or being “productive”. 👩🏼‍💻😮‍💨 When bleeding, our energy is low and our minds foggy, because that’s how our hormones work. This is a time for deep rest, not deadlines. Before I started working for myself, I used to ask my male boss for some days off during my bleed every month. I was fortunate to work for someone who honoured this. I know that’s not possible in every work environment… yet. But the more women start speaking up and demanding this, the more this will become the norm. The patriarchy doesn’t benefit from our rest, but our bodies do. 2. Cooking or preparing food. 👩🏼‍🍳🍳 In several cultures, like parts of India and Nepal, women traditionally don’t cook during their period. Menstruation is seen as a release, an outward-moving energy, cleansing, letting go. This creates a powerful Apana flow (downward-moving energy in Ayurveda), which is essential for the body’s natural detox. Cooking, on the other hand, is an act of creation. It involves infusing food with prana (life-force energy). You are literally transferring your energy into the nourishment you’re preparing. I like to honour this wisdom by asking my partner to cook, prepping in advance, or ordering in. (Yes, I’ll still make a soup if I crave it sometimes. It’s more of a guideline rather than a strict rule.) 3. Forcing myself to socialize 💃🥂 Energy turns inward during our bleed. We are more sensitive, more raw, more attuned to silence and solitude. Nature teaches us to retreat and rest during this phase. So if I cancel plans last-minute because my bleed just arrived, I no longer feel guilty. And I always tell the truth to my friend or family. Drink plenty of water and consider adding electrolytes to your drinks to help maintain a proper fluid balance. 3️⃣ Emphasize nutrient-dense foods: During non-fasting periods, focus on consuming nutrient-dense foods like leafy greens, lean protein, and healthy fats. This can help ensure that you’re getting the nutrients you need for optimal health and energy levels. 4️⃣ Practice stress management: Chronic stress can interfere with your menstrual cycle and make fasting more challenging.
