Ida B. Wells-Barnett is a noted civil rights leader, journalist, newspaper editor and suffragist. Wells dedicated her career to combating prejudice and violence, and advocating for African-American equality—especially for women. After the lynching of her friends, Wells to begin investigating lynchings and she made sure the world was aware of the cruel and inhumane actions that were occurring in America with African Americans being lynched in dramatic numbers for trivial and often falsely accused charges. Through her investigative journalism, she published the staggering numbers of African Americans being lynched and the ugly truth behind the killings; Wells was able to seek justice for those who could not obtain it for themselves. She traveled speaking in America and Europe promoting her cause for humanity while risking her own safety. Wells’s tours in Britain even influenced public opinion to the extent that British textile manufacturers fought back with economic strategies, imposing a temporary boycott on Southern cotton that pressured southern businessmen to condemn the practice of lynching publicly. She continued her anti-lynching work while becoming more focused on the civil rights of African Americans. She was a spokeswoman and an advocate for women being successful in the workplace, having equal opportunities, and creating a name for themselves. As a prominent Black suffragist, Wells held strong positions against racism, violence and lynching that brought her into conflict with leaders of largely white suffrage organizations. Her work helped establish the foundation of intersectional feminism, which explores how racism and sexism intersect in the lives of Black women. As a journalist, educator, and anti-lynching activist, Wells addressed the challenges Black women faced at the convergence of racism and sexism. #BlackHistory #WomensHistory
