Teachers, directors, peers, even strangers feel entitled to comment on your weight, proportions, muscle tone, or how you look in your costume.
3. Unpaid or underpaid labor framed as ‘exposure’
Rehearsals, performances, workshops—often unpaid or barely paid, with the expectation that passion should cover rent.
4. Starting adult-level pressure as literal children.
Training like a professional athlete at 8–12 years old, internalizing perfectionism, body surveillance, and competition stress and expecting to lead a “normal” life outside of the studio.
5. Comparing bodies as a form of feedback.
“Stand next to her.” “Look at their lines.” Direct comparison as instruction would be considered toxic in most learning environments—yet it’s routine in dance.
