My daughter recently told me I don’t use enough exclamation points in my texts to her. She said, “I can’t tell if you’re really excited about something without them.” And I was like… but if I say "Yay," it means… yay. Apparently it needs to mean Yay! Or maybe even Yay!!! The thing is, I’m a huge fan of punctuation. Exclamation points. Em dashes. Ellipses. Even colons. I sprinkle them everywhere like confetti in my book drafts. (Ask my editors, who I’m sure roll their eyes at the twenty-fifth em dash in a manuscript.) I’d pepper them throughout my Instagram posts too, but I don’t have keyboard shortcuts for them here like I do in Word on my Mac. (Yep, I love them so much I made my own shortcuts so I could use EVEN MORE em dashes. Take that, anyone who thinks an em dash = AI.) So if you’ve ever gotten a text from me that said, “That’s great,” please know I meant: “THAT’S GREAT!!! I’M THRILLED!!!” I just forgot to add the emotional closed-captioning. So tell me—what's your favorite punctuation mark?

Punctuation is body language for words. 🖋️ If you want to write scenes that make your readers hold their breath, you need to master the Em Dash (—). It is the ultimate tool for tension. Here is exactly how these three lines change the entire mood of a scene: 1️⃣ "Don't do this—" (The Interruption) Use this when a character is abruptly cut off. Maybe they were grabbed, silenced, or a literal explosion just happened. It leaves the reader hanging in suspense. 2️⃣ "—don't do this!" (The Outburst) Use this when a character is frantically breaking into an ongoing conversation, or the dialogue is picking up right in the middle of chaos. It feels frantic and breathless. 3️⃣ "Don't do this." (The Finality) Use the simple period for a cold, deadpan, or entirely defeated statement. No yelling. No fighting. Just a quiet, heavy reality. It is never just about what your characters say. It is about how they say it.
