Hyraxes are small, herbivorous mammals found mainly in Africa and the Middle East. Despite their size and rodent-like appearance, hyraxes are actually closely related to elephants and manatees! This surprising relation is due to similar dental and skeletal structures that they share with their larger relatives.
Hyraxes are compact, with short legs and ears, and range from about 30 to 60 cm in length. They have padded, rubbery feet with special sweat glands that help them grip onto rocks, allowing them to scale steep surfaces easily. Hyraxes live in groups and are typically found in rocky terrain or tree habitats, depending on the species. The rock hyrax is especially known for its vocalizations, including whistles and grunts, which help the group communicate.
As social animals, hyraxes live in colonies and display a range of interesting behaviors, including communal grooming and sharing lookout duties to spot predators. Their diet consists mainly of grasses, leaves, and occasionally fruits. Hyraxes have a unique digestive system, with multi-chambered stomachs that help them break down tough plant material efficiently, a trait that evolved to suit their herbivorous lifestyle.
