Chuck Jones’s 1942 Merrie Melodies short "The Dover Boys at Pimento University" is a landmark cartoon that broke from the polished Disney style with its graphic, stylized look and pioneering use of "smear" animation—using just one or two distorted frames to create a blur of extreme speed. Warner Bros. executives disliked the radical approach so much they tried to fire Jones, but kept him on just to meet release obligations. The film fell into the public domain after its copyright wasn’t renewed, making it a fixture on budget cartoon compilations. Mel Blanc voiced villain Dan Backslide using his natural speaking voice, and the characters’ names—Tom, Dick, and Larry—play on "Tom, Dick, and Harry." In 1983, Warner Brothers brought the world of The Dukes of Hazzard to Saturday mornings! This 30-minute animated series aired on CBS from February 5 to October 29, 1983. Produced by Hanna-Barbera Productions in association with Warner Bros. Television, the cartoon took the Duke family global. This time, the Duke boys and Daisy weren’t just outrunning trouble in Hazzard County they were racing around the world! Their mission? Win the prize money to save the family farm from foreclosure by Boss Hogg. Of course, Boss Hogg, Sheriff Rosco P. Coltrane, and Rosco’s dog Flash had other plans, scheming their way across Venice, Morocco, the Arctic Ocean, London, Greece, India, Uzbekistan, Hong Kong, Scotland, and beyond. Most episodes were framed as stories read by Uncle Jesse to his pet raccoon, Smokey. Trivia and Fun Facts: Two seasons (20 episodes total) were produced. Season 1 featured Coy and Vance Duke during the live-action cast dispute. Bo and Luke returned in Season 2, beginning with “Boss O’Hogg and the Little People.” Waylon Jennings and several live-action co-stars did not appear.
