To meet this increasing and fluctuating load, power providers and data center operators need to know what mix of generation might work best. Using the Advanced Research on Integrated Energy Systems (ARIES) platform and historical energy data from a partner in AI, our researchers showed how a combo of firm capacity and fast-response resources complement each other to meet a data center’s large, variable loads. Megawatts on a pitch deck don’t matter. Deliverable megawatts do. That means late‑stage queue position, executed interconnection agreements, defined network upgrades, and long‑lead equipment on order—especially high‑voltage transformers with multi‑year lead times. Why it matters: data centers can’t accept nodal basis blowouts, curtailment, or a “maybe 2029” COD. They need certainty—same‑node delivery or a sleeve that manages congestion, and increasingly storage or firming to hit 24/7 requirements. So the M&A premium shifts to projects with: studied and funded upgrades, rights‑of‑way and gen‑tie secured, substation bays reserved, and a credible path to 4–8 hour storage. Translation: the new currency is interconnection rights, not nameplate. Expect consolidation of queue positions and hybrid projects around deliverable nodes—where transmission already exists.
