When building deck stairs, everything comes down to two critical measurements: rise and run. In this video, I walk through exactly how I measure both so the stairs land correctly, feel comfortable to walk on, and meet standard expectations. We start by measuring total rise—from the landing pad up to the top of the deck boards—then calculate the run based on tread depth, overhang, and the number of steps.
I show how to transfer those measurements onto a pressure-treated 2×12 using a framing square and stair gauges, then trace each step cleanly and consistently. To avoid mistakes later, I dry-fit the stringers with the base plate and tread board so hanger locations are marked correctly before final installation. The stairs are anchored to the landing pad using concrete anchors drilled with a hammer drill and a ½-inch bit.
