These slender, reddish-pink worms can grow up to 20 cm (about 8 inches) in length and derive their color from hemoglobin, which allows them to efficiently extract oxygen from heavily polluted or stagnant water. They typically live with their heads buried in the mud while waving their tails in the water to facilitate gas exchange through their thin skin. As detritus feeders, they play a vital role in nutrient recycling by ingesting bacteria and decaying organic matter, effectively "turning over" sediment much like earthworms do in soil. ​Despite their somewhat unsightly reputation, sludge worms are ecologically significant and commercially useful. Their presence in high densities often serves as a biological indicator of poor water quality or organic pollution. In more controlled environments, they are utilized in wastewater treatment to help break down excess sludge and reduce maintenance requirements. Furthermore, they are a popular high-protein food source in the aquarium hobby, often sold live, frozen, or freeze-dried under the name Tubifex worms.
