Northern Europe during the Middle Devonian period was characterized by the dominance of the Caledonian Orogeny, a mountain range that stretched from modern day Scandinavia to North America. The remenants of these mountains form the Scottish Highlands, the Scandes (Scandinavian Mountains), Greenland’s Watkins Range and many of the westernmost ranges of North America. Old Red Sandstone, a large terrestrial sedimentary deposit was laid down in large lake and desert basins, deposited by rivers leading from the Caledonian Mountains. #map #appalachia #uk #europe #caledonia

This animal is an extinct genus of large arthrodire fish that existed during the Late Devonian period, about 382–358 million years ago. Dunkleosteus was a pelagic fish inhabiting open waters, and one of the first vertebrate apex predators of any ecosystem. The most recent and extensive studies on the body shape and size of D. terrelli producing estimated lengths of approximately 3.4 metres (11 ft) for typical adults and 4.1 metres (13 ft) for exceptionally large individuals of this species. 👈 FOLLOW US 🙌 ❤️ & Comment Fish 400 Million Years Ago: A Glimpse into the Past 400 million years ago, the Earth was a vastly different place. Land was still largely barren, and life was predominantly aquatic. Fish were the dominant vertebrates, and they were quite unlike anything we see today. A World of Primitive Fish * Jawless Fish: Many fish at this time lacked jaws. These creatures, like lampreys and hagfish, used their mouths for suction feeding. * Armored Fish: Some fish were heavily armored with bony plates, offering protection from predators. These include placoderms, which were the apex predators of their time. * Lobe-Finned Fish: A crucial group for understanding the transition to land, lobe-finned fish had fleshy fins with bones inside, similar to early tetrapods. The coelacanth is a famous example of a lobe-finned fish that has survived to the present day. The Importance of This Era The Devonian period, roughly 419 to 359 million years ago, is often referred to as the "Age of Fishes." It was a time of rapid diversification for fish, laying the groundwork for the evolution of land-dwelling vertebrates. Key developments during this time included: * The development of jaws: This was a significant evolutionary leap, allowing fish to become more efficient predators. * The emergence of bony skeletons: Replacing cartilage with bone provided greater support and protection. * The evolution of lungs: Some fish developed lungs, allowing them to survive in oxygen-poor waters or even venture onto land for short periods. A Legacy That Lives On While the fish of 400 million years ago were vastly different from their modern counterparts, they are our ancestors. The adaptations they developed paved the way for the incredible diversity of life we see today, including humans. Read all this 🤯 Good job have a 🍪. I got the incredible opportunity to see the ORIGINAL fossils of Tiktaalik: the fossil “caught in the act” of evolution. While many museums have an exhibit or display dedicated to this ancestral tetrapod, all of their materials are casts of the fossil remains, with the actual fossils stored in the Canadian Nature Museum in Ottawa. But recently these precious fossils went on loan to the Philadelphia Academy of Natural Sciences for display, including the HOLOTYPE (the specimen for which the species is described from). In addition to the holotype, dozens of other incredible fossils from the Devonian were on display. This included other specimens of Tiktaalik, giant predatory fish, armored fish, and other early tetrapods from Pennsylvania! The name Tiktaalik (Inuktitut ᑎᒃᑖᓕᒃ) roughly translates to “large freshwater fish” in the Inuit language. This is a very fitting and respectful name as the specimens come from rocks on Ellesmere Island in Nunavut, Canada. These incredible fossils are only on display until the end of September so go visit the @acadnatsci as soon as you can! . . . . . #tiktaalik #fishapod #tetrapod #fossils #evolution #missinglink #devonian #walkingwithmonsters

🌿 DEVONIAN GARDEN 🌿 . . . Another weekend, another new place we haven't been. Located in downtown Calgary's Core Shopping centre is this lush natural oasis. The mix of the serenity of nature and the hustle and bustle of the city makes this place such a hidden gem. We have to say that our favourite thing is not the indoor play area but the two large koi ponds located in the heart of the garden. It's the perfect escape from Calgary's cold temperatures! 🌿 #devoniangarden #exploreyyc #discovercalgary #yyclife #albertaiscalling #exploringourcity #weekendactivities #indoorplaypark #naturelover #natureindoors #plantlove #yycmoms #calgarymom #thingstodowithkids #motherhoodunfiltered #momssupportingmoms #discoverunder10k #motherhoodthroughig #lifeincalgary #adventuresincalgary #lifewiththedemiltos #lifewithmytribe
