Whilst there are many things that can negatively affect our microbiome, such as the artificial sweeteners I discussed the other day, there are some really simple steps we can take every day to nurture it and keep it healthy: . Diversity is king - a diverse whole foods diet supplies us with a wide range of different fibres, phytochemicals and micronutrients that support a flourishing microbial eco system. The more diverse the diet, the more diverse the microbiome. . Fill up on prebiotic foods - some fibres and long chain carbohydrates in foods can work as a powerful food source for the bacteria in our gut. You find them in foods like onions, garlic, sweet potatoes etc. These substances get fermented and partially broken down by the microbiome and this process allows the bacteria to multiply in number but also creates a healthier environment for them. This is because the fermentation process releases byproducts called short chain fatty acids that help to strengthen the gut lining (tight junction and mucus layer). . Don’t go mad on the sugar - we know that too much sugar isn’t wonderful for us for a million reasons, but it can affect the microbiome too. Sugar can be an effective food source for less favourable organisms that can potentially cause problems.
