Full-wave rectifiers are commonly used in power supplies to convert AC to DC, providing the steady DC voltage needed for electronic devices. There are two main types of full-wave rectifiers: Center-Tapped Full-Wave Rectifier and Bridge Rectifier. A Bridge Rectifier uses four diodes in a bridge configuration to convert both the positive and negative halves of the AC input into DC. ▶️ During the positive half-cycle of the AC waveform, diodes D1 and D2 are forward-biased, allowing current to flow through the load in the direction indicated. Diodes D3 and D4 are reverse-biased during this half-cycle and do not conduct. ▶️ During the negative half-cycle of the AC waveform, diodes D3 and D4 become forward-biased, allowing current to flow through the load in the same direction as during the positive half-cycle. Diodes D1 and D2 are reverse-biased in this cycle, preventing current from flowing through them. This consistent direction of current through the load results in a continuous DC output, as seen in the rectified waveform. In practical applications, a smoothing capacitor is often added to the output of the rectifier to smooth out the ripples in the DC output, providing a more steady and smooth DC voltage. Read caption 👍 Understanding Germanium Diode Behavior: The V-I Curve This slide explores the V-I (voltage-current) characteristics of a Germanium (Ge) PN junction diode, a fundamental semiconductor device. We examine its behavior under both forward and reverse bias conditions. Forward Bias: When the diode's P-side is connected to the positive battery terminal and the N-side to the negative, it's forward biased. Initially, current flow is minimal until the voltage reaches the knee voltage (around 0.3V for Ge). Beyond this, current increases rapidly with small voltage changes. Reverse Bias: Reversing the battery connections (P-side to negative, N-side to positive) creates reverse bias. Ideally, no current should flow. However, a tiny reverse saturation current exists due to minority carriers. Increasing reverse voltage further leads to reverse breakdown at a specific voltage (VRB), where a large current flows, potentially damaging the diode. The V-I Curve: The graph visually represents this behavior. The steep rise in current in the forward bias region after the knee voltage is evident. In reverse bias, we see the small leakage current and then the sharp breakdown. Key Parameters: * V (Source Voltage): The power supplied to the circuit. * Vo (Voltage across Diode): The voltage drop across the diode. * Io (Current through Diode): The current flowing through the circuit. * R (Resistor): Limits current to protect the diode. * Van (Knee Voltage): The voltage at which the diode starts conducting. * Is (Reverse Saturation Current): The small leakage current in reverse bias. * η (Ideality Factor): A correction factor, typically 2 for Ge. * VT (Thermal Voltage): Dependent on temperature, ~26mV at room temperature. * VRB (Reverse Breakdown Voltage): The voltage at which the diode breaks down in reverse bias.
