Here is how I made my strips for the quilted jacket made out of a sweatshirt! See the linked reel for part 1 of turning a sweatshirt into a cute quilted jacket! I used 12 fat quarters to cover my sweatshirt. From each fat quarter I cut 1 4x22 inch 1 5x22 inch 1 6x22 inch And have about a 3 inch scrap leftover I then stack each strip size in a pile, including the 3 inch scrap. Randomly select a strip from each pile and sew the 4 random strips together to make a new fat quarter. Then you will cut vertically from each new fat quarter 5 2 inch strips 4 2 1/2 inch strips Then you will take two strips the same width and sew them together at the end to get the length that you need. Do this will all your strips. Ta-da!!! Your strips are ready to attach to the sweatshirt. ✨If you’ve been dreaming about sewing a quilt jacket but feel a little nervous to start, you’re not alone. ✨After lots of searching, I gathered 6 quilt patterns that are trendy, have the right drape, and would be perfect for quilted jackets and coats—they’’re all officially on my to-make list!

Make a demo first. I used old towels (they’re thick like a quilt) so I could test the fit and construction before cutting into a precious quilt—and I’m so glad I did. It gave me the confidence to finally do it! ✨After my mock-up, I made three small but important changes:
1️⃣ Lengthened the sleeves and body hem about 3”
2️⃣ Gave the neckline a little more room (about 1” at the shoulders)
3️⃣ Added a scalloped hem by tracing a bowl and finishing it with bias binding to gently hug the curves ✨If sewing a quilt jacket is something you’ve been longing to try—but indecision or fear of choosing the wrong pattern has held you back—this is your sign. ✨I’ve gathered 6 great quilt jacket patterns so you don’t have to guess.
