If you’re composting your egg cartons and eggshells, here’s how to do it right 🌱♻️ 🥚 Eggshells Rinse them, let them dry, and crush them before adding to compost. They break down faster that way. 📦 Cardboard egg cartons Tear them into smaller pieces and mix them into your pile. They’re a great “brown” material and help balance food scraps. Good compost needs: ✔ “Greens” (food scraps, coffee grounds) ✔ “Browns” (cardboard, dry leaves) ✔ Air + moisture Simple system. Big payoff for your soil 🥬 #composting #gardeningtips #beginnergardener #sustainablegarden #growyourownfood zone7garden springgarden

Stop throwing eggshells away, especially if you're growing tomatoes or peppers this growing season! When tomato or pepper plants are low in calcium, they get blossom end rot which ruins the fruit. Eggshells are made up almost entirely of calcium carbonate and therefore are a perfect natural calcium booster. They also strengthen cell walls and support strong root growth, so why not? It won't solve your problems overnight but it does support longterm. 🥚 place eggshells on a baking sheet 🔥 bake @ 350° for 8-10 minutes. This kills any bacteria and makes them brittle for grinding. 🥚 smash them down so they fit in your blender better 🥚 grind them into a fine powder. The finer, the better! This helps them break down much faster for the soil to absorb. ➡️ Mix 1-2 tbsp into the hole before placing in your plant and work a little into the base after 4-6 weeks and water well. Eggplant, broccoli, cauliflower, Swiss chard, and spinach are also packed with calcium and would benefit from eggshells. 💡 If you have extras, you can also put them in your compost for them to break down and enrich your soil that way! Do you save your eggshells? #eggshells #foodwaste #calcium #gardencompost #fruitingvegetables

We’re sustainable over here! Egg shell prep: • Thoroughly rinse egg shells (insides & out) • Dehydrate them until bone dry • Grind them in a spice grinder, blender, food processor or by hand • Sprinkle onto your soil & work the dust into your soil Egg Shell Benefits: • Crazy calcium boost (strengths plant cell walls & helps prevent root rot) • Improves soil structure (loosens compacted soil) which improves draining & root growth specifically in raised beds & clay heavy soils • Gentle pH balancing (reduces soil acidity) • Natural pest deterrent ( slugs & snails ) • Slow release nutrient source which provides long term calcium supply (prevents burning) #sustainable #gardeningtips

I see a lot of concern about plastic in gardening. And I understand it. But I also see people throwing away perfectly usable materials… then buying “food-safe” plastic trays. Or making paper seed snails, wrapped in new cling film. Or replacing one product with another that still had to be manufactured, packaged, and shipped. That cycle doesn’t make sense to me. Seed snails are not supposed to be pretty. They’re not meant to be aesthetic. They’re a tool. I don’t buy new materials for them. I use compost bags, sandwich bags, packaging foam, bubble wrap- whatever is already in my home. Then I wash it. Dry it. Roll it. Store it. And use it again next year. For me, being mindful isn’t about chasing the next “better” material. It’s about reducing consumption. Using what already exists. Not producing more. We don’t need perfect systems. We need less waste. That’s my approach. #seedsnailmethod #upcycledgarden #reduceconsumption #growyourownfood #seedsnail

Eggshells aren’t just kitchen waste — they’re a powerhouse for your garden. 🌱 Rich in calcium, they help strengthen roots, stems, leaves, and fruits while boosting resistance against diseases, nutrient deficiencies, and harsh weather. Using them as a natural fertilizer is eco-friendly, cost-effective, and perfect for recycling kitchen scraps. Here’s how to make it: 1. Crush the Eggshells – Use a mortar or rolling pin until they become a very fine powder. 2. Mix with Lemon Juice – The acidic lemon juice reacts with the alkaline eggshells, releasing calcium and creating bubbles. 3. Let it Sit – Allow the mixture to rest for 24 hours so most of the eggshell dissolves. 4. Dilute with Water – Mix the solution in 1 liter of water for a ready-to-use liquid fertilizer. 5. Apply to Plants – Pour at the base of plants or spray on foliage for stronger, healthier growth. This simple method turns waste into nourishment, giving your garden a natural boost while helping the planet. 🌿 Credits: Natural Plant Fertilizer @Agriculture0.1 If you’re building a more self-sufficient home, herbs are one of the easiest places to start. 🌱 Composting turns everyday scraps into free plant food. Eggshells, veggie peels, coffee grounds, and even paper egg cartons can go right back into your garden instead of the trash. Less waste, healthier soil, and stronger plants — all from what you already have at home. ♻️ Start small. Your plants will thank you later.

In the spirit of being a woman who makes everything possible, you’ll love this: ✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨ **Eggshells are not trash; they are a goldmine of minerals.** Throwing them away is like tossing out free resources for your health, your home, and your garden. Since eggshells are roughly **95% calcium carbonate**, they are one of the most versatile "scraps" in your kitchen. ✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨ ### 🌿 1. For Your Garden (The "Green Thumb" Secret) If you want a garden that flourishes, eggshells are a must-have. * **Mineral Boost:** Crushed shells add calcium to the soil, which prevents **blossom end rot** in tomatoes, peppers, and eggplants ✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨ * **Pest Control:** Coarsely crushed shells create a "barbed wire" barrier that deters soft-bodied pests like **slugs and snails**. * **Compost Accelerator:** They add essential aeration and minerals to your compost pile. ### 🏠 2. For Your Home (The "Natural Cleaner") Eggshells are a powerful, non-toxic abrasive. * **Clean Tough Pots:** Mix crushed shells with a little soapy water to scrub stubborn, burnt-on food off cast iron or stainless steel. * **Whiten Linens:** Put clean, crushed shells in a mesh bag with a few slices of lemon and toss them in the wash. They help keep whites from turning grey. * **Sharpen Blender Blades:** Keep a few shells in the freezer. Toss them in the blender with a little water and pulse—the hard shells help "hone" the edges of the blades. ### 🥗 3. For Your Health (The "Calcium Powerhouse") *Note: Always boil shells for 10 minutes first to kill bacteria like Salmonella.* * **Homemade Calcium Powder:** Once boiled and dried, grind them into a fine powder in a coffee grinder. A half-teaspoon contains roughly **400–500mg of calcium**. You can add this to smoothies or juice! ✨✨✨✨✨ * **Better Coffee:** Add a teaspoon of crushed shells to your coffee grounds before brewing. The calcium neutralizes the acid, making the coffee smoother and less bitter (great if you have a sensitive stomach). ##eggshell #healthylifestyle #eggshellbenefits #reels #healthylifestyle

If you’ve been following us, you know we say it all the time — compost is key to a healthy garden. We skip most big box fertilizers because we’re building soil, not just feeding plants for a quick boost. When you add organic material — leaves, grass clippings, kitchen scraps — and let it break down into compost, you’re feeding the entire soil ecosystem. Here’s the science: Healthy soil is alive. A single teaspoon of good garden soil can contain billions of microorganisms — bacteria, fungi, protozoa — all working to break down organic matter and convert nutrients into forms your plants can actually absorb. Compost increases microbial activity, improves soil structure, boosts water retention, and helps roots breathe. Think of your soil like a battery. Every time you harvest a crop, you’re draining nutrients from that battery. If you don’t recharge it with organic matter, production drops. Compost is how we recharge the system. It’s not just dirt. It’s a living network. That’s why we say… compost is key. #CompostIsKey #SoilHealth #RegenerativeGardening #GrowYourOwnFood #GrimesAndCoHomestead

Adding high quality compost to your garden beds at least twice a year is one of the keys to a successful garden. 💚 • Compost improves soil structure, replenishes nutrients that plants have used up, and gives everything a clean, fresh start for the new season. I like to add mine before spring planting and again before fall planting. Over the years I’ve tried many different types, but Back To Nature cotton burr compost has been my favorite, and I’ve seen great results with it.
