DOWhen your dog puts their paw on you, it’s like m a sweet little “I’m here with you,” and it is so so precious, but also it’s a real, measurable way dogs communicate. Dogs use touch as a form of communication, and pawing is one of those signals that can mean “pay attention to me” or “keep doing that.” Your dog may have picked it up as an attention-seeking button because they learned that pawing at you makes you give them attention 🥺
Here is a scientific aspect: there’s even a puppy-rooted reason for it: puppies paw at their mother while nursing, so using their paws to ask for something is a behavior that starts early and can stick around as they grow.
Sometimes it’s not an attention request, it is just checking in (my dog does this 🥺). In dog language, it can mean “You’re my person.” As with all my posts, there are clues and the best clue is the rest of their body: if they’re relaxed and soft-faced, it’s usually friendly and affiliative; if they look tense or uneasy, it might be stress or uncertainty.

TH1️⃣ I used to think I was the perfect dog owner. I hugged my dog constantly. I spoke to her in a high-pitched baby voice because it felt affectionate. I stared into her eyes to show her love. Then a dog behaviorist watched me interact with her for ten minutes and said: “She’s tolerating you. She’s not enjoying this.” I was stunned. Turns out, I’d been misreading her signals for years.
2️⃣ Here’s what most people don’t realize. Dogs don’t naturally hug. When one dog puts their paws on another, it’s dominance, not affection. So when you wrap your arms around your dog and squeeze — even gently — they’re tensing up, not relaxing. Watch their body language next time. Ears back. Eyes looking away. Mouth tight. They’re enduring it because they love you. But they’re not enjoying it.
3️⃣ The baby voice is even worse. Dogs hear high-pitched sounds as excitement or distress. When you talk to them in that sing-song tone, you’re not soothing them — you’re overstimulating them. They think something’s happening. Calm, low tones actually relax dogs. High-pitched squealing puts them on alert.
4️⃣ Staring directly into their eyes? That’s a threat in dog language. Direct eye contact means challenge or confrontation. Your dog looks away because they’re being polite — not because they’re ignoring you. When you force eye contact by holding their face or leaning in close, you’re creating stress. They tolerate it because you’re family. But it makes them uncomfortable every single time.
5️⃣ The worst one? Forcing them to interact with other dogs. Not all dogs are social. Some prefer their own space. But owners drag them to dog parks, push them toward strangers’ pets, assume they want to play. Your dog’s stiff body and tucked tail aren’t shyness — they’re saying “I don’t want this.” Respecting their boundaries isn’t antisocial. It’s kindness.
Dogs love us enough to tolerate what makes them uncomfortable. The least we can do is learn their language — and stop assuming our love translates the way we think it does.
