Across the animal kingdom, humans aren’t the only ones known to experiment with mind-altering substances. In rare observations, dolphins have been seen gently handling pufferfish, carefully passing them between one another for extended periods rather than treating them as prey. When threatened, pufferfish release a powerful defensive toxin. In very small doses, this chemical appears to induce a trance-like, disoriented state in dolphins that come into contact with it. The deliberate and controlled way the dolphins interact with the pufferfish suggests this behavior isn’t accidental. Instead, it points to experimentation, awareness, and social learning, qualities we often reserve for ourselves. #WildlifeWednesday Incredible footage captured by @zanzibar_mermaid

Wait for it… 😭 @dolphin.quest gave us an experience we will never forget 🐬 Alijah was so scared at first, but the team was incredibly patient, gentle, and encouraging with him every step of the way. Watching him go from tears… to laughing, playing, and not wanting to leave! Our hearts are so full! (we’ll be playing this at his future wedding 🤣) And realizing our time at Dolphin Quest is helping our kids learn to care for dolphins and the world around them made it all the more meaningful! 🩵 #dolphins #familytravel #momlife #dadlife #vacation

A pod of dolphins glides through calm ocean waters, but one has a wild surprise—a live octopus draped completely over its head like a hood! The dolphin keeps swimming in perfect formation with its pod, occasionally shaking its head as the octopus clings and shifts, tentacles trailing behind in the water.

① According to reports from local authorities and eyewitness accounts, an extraordinary event took place in October 2004 near Ocean Beach in New Zealand. While swimming in open water, Rob Howes, his daughter Nikita, and two of her friends suddenly found themselves surrounded by a group of seven dolphins. At first, it seemed like simple curiosity or playful behavior from the animals. ② The situation changed when Rob noticed a shark nearby. Almost instantly, the dolphins’ behavior shifted. They formed a tight circle around the swimmers and stayed extremely close, creating a living barrier between the people and the approaching danger. What looked playful moments before now felt deliberate and protective. ③ For the next 40 minutes, the dolphins held their formation. Each time the shark came closer, the dolphins reacted aggressively, slapping the water with their tails and charging in its direction. Their coordinated behavior was so intense that the shark eventually gave up and swam away. Only then did the dolphins slowly break formation and disappear into the open sea. ④ Scientists later explained that dolphins are highly intelligent and deeply social animals capable of complex group coordination. While such incidents are rare, there is documented evidence that dolphins sometimes show protective behavior not only toward their own kind, but toward humans as well. This case became one of the most striking examples of that phenomenon. ⑤ This story raises a question that goes beyond biology. Is the instinct to protect something only human, or is it deeper than we think? Share your thoughts in the comments and tell us how you interpret this moment. Scientists were shocked to discover that dolphins appear to use pufferfish for recreation. When a group finds one, they gently chew on the fish to force it to release a defensive nerve toxin. Dolphins have learned to ingest just enough to induce a hypnotic, trance-like state. After passing the fish around the group, they have been filmed floating vertically near the surface, completely motionless and seemingly mesmerized by their own reflections. Put these two highly vocal animals next to each other out of the water, and you get the most confusing conversation in the animal kingdom. 🎙️ Sea lions are famous for their loud, aggressive barking and coughing, while dolphins sound like high-tech alien spaceships shooting squeaky lasers. When they start “talking” back and forth, it looks exactly like two people arguing in completely different languages. Neither of them has any idea what the other is saying, but they both absolutely refuse to lose the argument! We love sharing hilarious cross-species interactions on our page because watching a chaotic sea lion try to out-scream a squeaky dolphin is guaranteed comedy.
