Down jacket - under or over the shell? Well it depends... As a rule of thumb insulation works much better underneath your shell layer but in reality it’s not that simple. Yes the closer it is to your body the faster it will start to trap the heat that is lost and especially if you don’t block that process with a goretex layer. Most under the shell down jackets are quite fragile being made from thinner lighter materials that can rip easily on sharp rocks or bushes. A rip can mean you loose all the down from that area and it could be an expensive repair. So it’s best underneath your shell jacket, right? Well not always. If you have to keep taking your shell layer on and off to remove or add insulation you could end up getting colder and also wasting more time. Also in really windy conditions you are risking your shell jacket blowing away! (which I have actually seen before!) I personally find it’s often better to have a bigger down or synthetic jacket that is designed go on the outside of everything. This means I can take it off without having to remove my shell, therefore eliminating steps at change-over points. It’s a good way to add extra warmth for a cold belay or a long ski descent in the shade and then quick and easy to take off when you’re getting too warm. For this type of jacket, look for specific features like stronger fabric, heavier zips and bigger cuffs that can go over big gloves or mitts. #themountainpeople #downjacket #winter #winterclimbing #iceclimbing #skimountaineering #backcountry
