It was... 👇🏼 An osteosarcoma 😢 (a type of bone cancer) 🙏🏻Please keep reading ⤵️ 🩺 follow along! @the_pediatricnp_mom Trigger warning - I don't love posting these types of cases for two reasons: 1. Its sad 😔 2. It's extremely rare- and I HATE fear mongering BUT, we have to be aware that childhood cancer, unfortunately, is very real. So, it's important to know the warning signs in the extremely rare case you'll need them later. (save this post) *EARLY INTERVENTION SAVED THIS CHILD'S LIFE & he is thriving 💙 Osteosarcoma is the most common type of childhood bone cancer. It typically occurs in the long bones of the arms and legs (tibia, femur, humerus, radius), and most commonly presents between ages 10-25. Physical exam + XRAY is typically all that's necessary for initial diagnosis. The incidence is approx 5 cases per million children per year. So, RARE, but still important to be aware. 📣 The most common symptom of osteosarcoma is PAIN in the affected bone, especially pain that came out of nowhere (no other injury, overuse). The pain often worsens with activities and may even be present at night time. And, when that area of the bone is touched will be the most painful - we call this point tenderness. ‼️‼️ Pain that wakes your child at night should ALWAYS be evaluated, especially if also persistent during the day. Other symptoms that may be associated: - swelling of the area - difficulty walking/moving the nearest joint - fatigue - fever The exact cause of osteosarcoma is unknown, but some risk factors include: - genetic factors - bone growth disorders - radiation exposure - previous bone injury ✨️ PS- I published a course called How to Think Like a Provider that teaches you how WE think through symptoms and problems- and the framework we use to come up with a diagnosis and plan. But when bone cancer does occur in children, it is often mistaken for: • Growth pain • Sports injury • School-related fatigue That delay in evaluation can matter. Warning signs parents should not ignore: – Bone pain lasting for weeks – Pain that wakes the child at night – Swelling around a bone – Limp without clear injury Not every bone pain is serious. But persistent or worsening pain always deserves medical assessment. Early diagnosis significantly improves outcomes in bone cancers such as osteosarcoma and Ewing sarcoma. Awareness reduces delay. Some tumors, like Ewing’s Sarcoma, are more common in children and young patients. ⚠️ This cancer can occur in: • Bones of the legs (especially around the knee) • Shoulders or chest • Muscles and other soft tissues One challenge is that Ewing’s Sarcoma may also cause fever, so it is sometimes mistaken for a bone infection (osteomyelitis). 🔬 Accurate diagnosis is crucial: X-ray, MRI, PET scan, and biopsy help confirm the disease and guide treatment. ✔️ Treatment usually includes chemotherapy, surgery, and/or radiation therapy. Bone cancers generally occur in young people and children. In bone cancer, we have to amputate the limb of patient and they become debilitated for whole life, which is a big mental and emotional trauma for the patient and family. ECRT ( extra corporeal radiation therapy) is a technique in which we give the radiation to the bone during surgery. Patient being in the operating table, we remove the bone having cancer, we remove the cancer and then bring the bone to the radiation room under aseptic conditions and deliver the radiation to the bone, while patient is in OT. We then place the bone back in the patient and complete the surgery. By this method, we can salvage the limb of the patient. #radiationtherapy #radiationoncology #radiationtherapist #bonecancer #bonecancerawareness
