Every child develops differently.
But if writing consistently causes distress, frustration, or avoidance, that’s not something to ignore.
🚩 Signs to look for:
• Extremely slow or effortful handwriting
• Letter reversals beyond early primary years
• Inconsistent spacing or messy alignment
• Complaints of hand pain or fatigue.
• Avoidance, tears, or shutdown during writing tasks
• Strong verbal storytelling, but very limited written output
• Difficulty organizing ideas on paper
👩⚕️ Who to speak to:
Start with:
• Your child’s teacher
• A school support team member
• An occupational therapist (for motor planning & fine motor skills)
• An educational psychologist (for learning assessment if needed)
Early support matters, not for labels, but for access.
🛠 What helps (for most struggling writers, diagnosis or not):
🔹 Typing to reduce motor load and free cognitive space
🔹 Pencil grips or triangular pencils to improve control
🔹 Graphic organizers & sentence starters to support planning
🔹 Shorter writing chunks with movement breaks
🔹 Verbal rehearsal before writing

HADysgraphia is not about sloppy letters.
It’s not laziness.
It’s not a lack of effort.
And it’s definitely not something kids just “grow out of.”
Dysgraphia is a breakdown in the complex brain-body systems required for written expression.... motor planning, working memory, language formulation, visual-motor integration, executive functioning… all working at once.
When we reduce it to “neater handwriting,” we miss the real problem.
And when we miss the real problem? Kids compensate. Avoid. Shut down. Or get labeled.

Does handwriting feel exhausting for your child?
For kids with dysgraphia, writing isn’t just slow. It’s mentally heavy.
Here are 3 simple ways to help:
😃 Teach cursive
In my experience, kids love it. It feels like a craft, and it builds the foundational skills needed for smooth letter joining and efficient writing later on.
😃 Talk the letters through
Teach your child the formation oral steps that they can echo when they form their letters. Have your child quietly say the formation instructions to themselves as they write. This supports accurate formation, reduces cognitive load, and helps writing flow. After practise, it will become automatic.
😃 Fix the set-up
Straight back (tummy muscles on, slouching is the enemy here), facing the page square on. Chair at the right height and stable. Correct pencil grip. Other hand holding the page still. These basics matter more than people realise and make a huge difference to handwriting.
When writing feels easier, confidence grows.
And confident writers are far more willing to edit, improve, and keep going.

DRThis little lacing board from @sparkandwow is one of my favorites.
It’s a great fidget. It allows for lots of creativity and can be used in endless different ways. Pulling the strings back out provides a satisfying “pop” feeling and sound too.
It’s also a fun and low pressure way to practice fine motor control and build hand strength.

KAIt’s great to see places of higher education start to do more for autistic students.
Unfortunately, many people on the spectrum have more than just autism. Many of us also have academic challenges in the form of learning disabilities. And while autism related accommodations are great, having the ability to wear headphones won’t help me with math. Having dim lighting isn’t going to help my ability to retain material. And support groups are wonderful but that won’t help me read any better.
