When it comes to protein intake, quantity matters—but so does quality. Protein quality refers to a protein source’s ability to provide the essential amino acids (EAAs) necessary for human health and its digestibility. High-quality proteins supply all nine EAAs in adequate amounts and are easily digestible, ensuring efficient utilization by the body. The higher your protein intake, the less critical the source becomes... but when the goal is body composition, fat loss, muscle maintenance, or healthy aging then things like caloric density, protein distribution and leucine content start to play a bigger role. Protein quantity is the foundation. Aim for 1g per pound of your target or ideal body weight per day. Fine-tuning protein quality and distribution is the next crucial step for optimal body composition and aging well. Utilizing animal-based, high-quality proteins and dosing your protein sufficiently (30-50g) to support a robust first and last meal of the day are two easy ways to do this.
