Final days to experience "Northern Lights" at Fondation Beyeler! Hurry up! This Sunday, May 25, 2025, marks the closing of the mesmerizing exhibition "Northern Lights" at the Fondation Beyeler. Curated by Dr. Ulf Küster, this unique exhibition brings together 74 landscape masterpieces from Scandinavian and Canadian artists, created between 1888 and 1937. The exhibition delves into the profound inspiration artists drew from the boreal forests, capturing the ethereal light of endless summer days, the mystique of long winter nights, and the awe-inspiring aurora borealis. Notable works include works by Hilma af Klint, Edvard Munch, Emily Carr, and Tom Thomson, each portraying the northern landscapes' spiritual and emotional resonance, like Tom Thomson's work "Northern River", 1915, a distinctive interplay of light and shadow, that becomes more colourful and vivid upon closer inspection. Complementing the exhibition is "Boreal Dreams", a digital installation by contemporary Danish artist Jakob Kudsk Steensen. This immersive work explores the impacts of climate change on boreal ecosystems through virtual landscapes crafted from scientific data and gaming technology. Don't miss this extraordinary journey through northern landscapes and artistic interpretations and get your tickets now online or directly on site. “Northern Lights” is on display until Sunday, May 25, 2025, 6 pm. #FondationBeyeler #BeyelerNorthernLights #TomThomson #Art Credits: Tom Thomson, Nördlicher Fluss, 1915, Öl auf Leinwand, 115,1 x 102 cm, National Gallery of Canada, Ottawa, erworben 1915, Foto: NGC Tom Thomson, Pine Island, Georgian Bay, 1914–1916, National Gallery of Canada, Ottawa, Vermächtnis Dr. J.M. 🐌 See how slimy gels have made its way from the food and medicine industry, through the toy,- fashion- and runway business (Prada’s menswear collection SS24) and now the art world. 🧑‍🔬In recent years, a new slime- or gelly-looking formula has been developed for conservation purposes to easily and effectively clean artwork without damaging or disturbing the pigments. Our art conservators started to explore new methods in the lab, with different chemicals and ingredients, customizing the formula to suit the painting’s needs. 📽️ In this video, MUNCH’s art conservators are using a gel-looking formula to clean a painting by Edvard Munch titled ”Man in the Cabbage Field” (1943). By scooping the gel from the container, they start the process by shaping the gel into small ”sausages” or any preferred shapes tailored to a specific area. The next step is to gently roll or place the gel on top of the areas that need to be cleaned. After a few seconds, the formula is carefully removed from the area. 🎨 In this case, the oil painting is in good condition. However, it has a matte and rough surface that would be far too sensitive for rinsing with other liquid solvents (implying rubbing!). Various artworks have their own specific needs, meaning there are no standards within the conservation field that goes for all - cleaning an artwork needs to be adapted. The aim is to protect the painting during the cleanup without damaging it. Efficiency is another bonus, but not a primary criterion. 🖼️ ”Man in the Cabbage Field ” (1943) will be on loan at @berlinischegalerie called ”Edvard Munch. Magic of the North” - opens 15.09.2023 #munchmuseet #EdvardMunch #MUNCH

🖌️ Take a closer look and you’ll see that these aren’t just ordinary brushstrokes. Artist @eliza_reinhardt (Eliza Reinhardt) creates large-scale replicas of her favorite works from the everyday things you can find in your closet. From socks to t-shirts to sheets, she uses textiles to mimic the textures of a traditional painting. “I create the same movements and shapes that I would with a stroke of paint, just with a sock or a t-shirt,” says Eliza. “I really see paintings in their shapes and I very easily can kind of break down paintings into strokes that then I can create out of fabric.” With this unique approach to fine art, she’s hoping to make it easier to engage with the paintings she holds close to her heart. “I hope that the way that I create work breaks down the barrier of exclusivity—allowing folks to recognize objects or search for the dog, notice how one sock creates an eyebrow or that the glisten on the lip is created by a packing peanut!” 🖼️ Pictured here: Edvard Munch, Dog’s Head (1942) Photo © Munchmuseet @munchmuseum Music by Scott Dugdale #FiberArt #FineArt #OilPainting #MixedMedia
