With such amazing creatures hiding beneath the sand, it's always best to make sure you're aware of your surroundings and not disturb the bottom. Cruising through the depths with is patterns on full display, this is one of my favourite fish in British Columbia! Yep that's right, Wolf Eels are in fact fish. Although we call them eels, you can see its pectoral fins as it glides along this rocky pinnacle unlike true eels that lack these appendages. There's nothing quite like the privilege of observing a Wolf Eel out of its den. This male looks as though it had been out hunting for a meal when it first swam up to us. After a breif hello, with a visibly full belly it was on its way elegantly moving through the dark depths back to its den. It felt like such a honor to capture this moment on a recent Rockfish survey dive with @bcmarinelife and dives buddies @lee_ann_sharp and @amylovemountain Although the main goal of our survery dives is to observe and document rockfish, it's hard to pass up a moment to film such a beautiful animal. 🥰 #wolfeel #pnwdiving #divebc #scubadiving #explorebc #Eel #padi #gopro #oliviasreefdiving #underwatervideo #britishcolumbia #marinelife #divecanada #howesound

Creepy or cool?! There must have been hundreds of them in this area. These are called Garden eels! sometimes also referred to as spaghetti eels.🍝 Garden eels are known for their habit of burrowing into the sandy seabed, where they live in burrows they create. These burrows can be quite deep, and the eels position themselves with just their upper bodies protruding from the sand, resembling strands of spaghetti or plants in a garden. This behavior is where they get their common name “garden eels.” 
They are characterized by their long, thin bodies, which can reach lengths of up to 16 inches (40 centimeters) or more. They are typically a pale yellow or brownish color and have a relatively small head with large eyes. These are a group of small, slender eels belonging to the family Congridae. Garden eels are social animals and often live in colonies, which can range in size from a few individuals to hundreds or even thousands. These colonies are typically found in areas with strong ocean currents, which help bring them a constant supply of planktonic food. To evade these threats, like humans, the garden eels can quickly retract into their burrows. They’re quite difficult to photograph so I decided to leave my GoPro on the sand until they can come out of their hideyholes.
