Ovary Aging Isn’t Just About Egg Quality Source: DOI: 10.1126/science.adx0659 Recent work from University of California, San Francisco and the Chan Zuckerberg Biohub has uncovered a surprising new player in the ageing of eggs (oocytes) — the nervous-system signals in the ovary. The researchers found that networks of sympathetic nerves (the kind that drive the “fight-or-flight” response) become increasingly dense in ovaries as they age. They also observed that if these nerves are experimentally removed in mice, the reserve of eggs remains higher (i.e., fewer are prematurely activated) though fewer proceed to maturation, suggesting that neural signals help determine both how many eggs are “used up” and when. What this implies is that ovarian ageing isn’t only about the intrinsic quality or quantity of the egg itself, but about the egg’s micro-environment — including nerve fibres, supporting glial cells, blood vessels and connective tissue — that together influence how quickly the egg pool is depleted and how well individual eggs mature. The sympathetic nerves appear to act as a kind of “timer” or regulatory system: more nerve activity may accelerate activation of eggs (thus reducing the reserve) or induce changes in the ovarian ecosystem (for example fibrosis, inflammation) that reduce egg quality. #menopause #women #research
