THElgin Cathedral, founded in 1224, quickly became one of medieval Scotland’s most magnificent churches and the seat of the Bishops of Moray. Built of red sandstone, it symbolised both spiritual authority and regional power. In 1270, a devastating fire damaged much of the structure, prompting an ambitious rebuilding that made it even grander. Tragedy struck again in 1390 when Alexander Stewart, the “Wolf of Badenoch,” burned the cathedral during a violent dispute with the bishop. Though restored once more, the cathedral’s fortunes declined after the Scottish Reformation in 1560, when it was abandoned as an active place of worship. Years of neglect followed, and in 1711 the great central tower collapsed. Today, its impressive ruins remain a striking reminder of Scotland’s turbulent medieval past.

SCElgin Cathedral, once known as the Lantern of the North.
This is one of those places I keep coming back to. It’s never too busy, and somehow still feels like a bit of a secret.
On this trip, I visited twice. The first time, the sun was shining… but it just didn’t feel right. I wanted that moody atmosphere. So I waited for the clouds, and came back when it finally felt like itself again.
Founded in 1224, Elgin Cathedral was once one of the most magnificent churches in Scotland. Fires and conflict left it in ruins, but so much still remains, like the beautiful octagonal Chapter House and the intricate medieval carvings scattered throughout.
