SPHow to Survive Chronic Asthma
My grandfather is a keepsake of
my grandmother's lifetime.
He speaks of her
like a diary of a monument
spilling dollops of unread words
that houses history as a refugee,
decorating the present
with delicate minarets for being
an immigrant.
The henna-washed hair flowing down
till her waist like red sandstone
cherished the remnants of
misfortune and uncertainty
of the past within her mind
where she treasured stories about
blood and belonging, friends and family,
peeling eyeballs instead of oranges,
kissing the grave of her sibling
instead of lovers, birthing an amalgamation
of differences around her intersecting
only to cause cracks in her being.
Her eyes, like the Diwan-i-Aam
addressed her near ones
with the gentleness that comes
after a brutal calamity.
They would tell you how she searched
for heaven beneath her mother's feet
and closed them tight to ignore the
rigid patriarchal rules her father imposed.
The kohl-lined meander down the
sockets resembling stars twinkling,
would tell you why she was named Laila.
Her soul was the Diwan-i-Khaas
which only allowed her closest allies in.
She would keep listening to the deaf,
describe colours to the blind,
mold reality into a dream,
cast herself like a spell
to sweep misfortune as if
she imprinted Solomon's book
of magic in her chest
before he could hide it from the world.
Her hands did not roll chapatis
under the rolling pin,
but renovate souvenirs
and paint grief into giggles
creating her own Rang Mahal
on a charcoal-dark pan.
She almost made me lose belief in science.
Her fingers gave the 15 phases to the moon.
Her feet were sunburned.
They were the mirrors of light
or name them segments of
the Sheesh Mahal.
She loathed traveling. If asked why,
she would say that her
treacherous history has moved her enough and please trust me when I say that
her toenails gave fishes to lakes.
Just like the Red Fort is the lung of Delhi
making it breathe
despite the poorest AQI,
do you now know whose
fresh memories make me survive
this chronic Asthma?
