sometimes all you need to crank out a landscape architecture model is a chunk of styrofoam and some toothpicks - he’s a lil ugly but in the best way; I love em’ ___ a rapid prototype model created for the @harvardgsd @gsd_mla Landscape Representation 2 course. ___ The Western sycamore (Platanus racemosa) is a species of plane tree native to the valleys, canyons, and foothills of California. It is distinguished from other plane trees such as the American sycamore (Platanus occidentalis) by its proclivity towards unusual growth habits. Whereas most plane trees possess a fairly regular, pyramidal architecture that is commonly found in many other tree species, Platanus racemosa will often bend and twist to create irregular forms that are less vertically dramatic. This is particularly true in areas where the soil anchoring Western sycamores is susceptible to high levels of erosion, such as the perennial canyon creeks where these trees often reside. Although capable of growing in a form that is akin to the common perception of what constitutes a normal tree shape, a Western sycamore will often grow more horizontally in areas of higher disturbance. The model reflects this gradient of growth habits; as one moves down from the flat mesa and towards the valley bottom, trees acquire more lean.
