Hundreds of the wrong federal employees — including key CDC staff working on measles and Ebola — were mistakenly fired this weekend as part of a wave of White House layoffs during the ongoing government shutdown. Vice President JD Vance acknowledged the error Sunday, but tried to blame Senate Democrats for the fallout. “The government shutdown inevitably leads to some chaos,” Vance said on Face the Nation. “We are figuring out how to take money from some areas and give it to other areas.” The layoffs began Friday, with more than 1,000 CDC employees receiving reduction-in-force notices — an unusual move during a shutdown, when federal workers are typically furloughed and later repaid. No permanent layoffs took place during previous recent shutdowns. On Saturday, administration officials revealed that several hundred of the notices were sent in error. CBS News’ Margaret Brennan noted that it was the White House approved the dismissals despite Vance’s attempt to shift blame to Democrats. White House budget director Russell Vought confirmed Friday that “RIFs (Reductions In Force) have begun.” Federal unions say they plan to challenge the move.
